Thrilling, gripping adventure story, a must read

I stumbled across this book randomly in a very outdated ship's library where most of the books were from the 1960's-70's. And I'm glad I did.

For anyone interested in travel and adventure this book is immediately interesting, gripping you right from the start. The greatest thing about this book, in addition to the adventures, is the author's (also the translator's) writing style. The author speaks so matter-of-factly and with a touch of dry humor about all these fantastic adventures that it makes the reader that more amazed by them when you think about what is really happening. Though it might be a cliche, the author makes you feel you are right there with them, not just a spectator but almost an active participant.

I have since bought this book myself and read it twice, it is a quick read. In fact I left the old copy where I found it on the chance that someone else will stumble across it as well, and enjoy it as much as I have.

The author himself is quite a character, sort of a French academic Indiana Jones as another reviewer put it, and has written another book that I plan to read. Highly recommended!

You won't believe this story.............

I read Panjamon in the sixties. I had trouble finding it on the internet. Perhaps one adventure like this is enough for one lifetime.

Lost in the Borneo interior during the 60's, the author comes across some very different looking natives; are they friendly?, well, sort of, they shoot him with a paralyzing, non-deadly, dart, then haul him back to the tribe for 3 years.

A multitude of perils and adventures ensue including a marriage ritual requiring being put naked into a hole filled with fire ants then immediately being banished to the forest to survive alone, cold, and infected, with no cell phone.

If you're an adventure and travel reader, check this out.

It's a remarkable tale and it's incredible that the author survived.

Unique Insights into the Bornean Rain Forest

This is one of the very rare books offering insight into the life of indigenous people before civilization even touched them. The Kajan and Iban peoples of Borneo were still living as hunters at stone age level in the impenetrable forests of Borneo when the author visited both tribes and spent considerable time in an Iban village of headhunters. He went through the initialization rituals and married an Iban woman, learned to hunt by blowpipe and appreciate the rich and lighthearted life of the primitive.
This book offers views that deeply affected my outlook on our species. Still, the author is a zoologist and had no anthropologist ambitions whatsoever to begin with. I rate it equal to Jean Liedloffs books. Too bad it is out of print, possibly because it was put in the "travel and adventure" section.

He claims his methods can be applied universally, but I'm not so sure.

I had heard a lot of people rave about this book before I finally picked it up and decided to read it for myself. I'm glad that I read it, but I don't think it was quite as life-changing for me as it was for some of my friends. Don't get me wrong, Ferriss makes some excellent points and he's got some really great tips and tricks in here, I'm just not sure how universal they really are.

First of all, when I picked up the book, I didn't expect that he was literally working only four hours a week. I thought he was just talking about ways to spend less time working, but that "The 4-Hour" just sounded good (since he now has a whole line of books with titles that start that way). Nope. Turns out he really only worked four hours every week for a few years. I hate him. Now, with his series of books and everything, that's not true so much, so I hate him less. Now his job is much more similar to what I actually want to do.

As I said, Ferriss has some great ways of eliminating clutter and busywork, including things you don't even think of as busywork. I've already started implementing some of these tips at work, and they've come in pretty handy so far. I keep meaning to get rid of a bunch of my physical clutter, but my laziness keeps getting in the way of that. I'll get around to it in the next few weeks.

I also appreciated his philosophy of taking mini-retirements throughout life, rather than one long retirement at the end of life. I never did understand the point of retirement, so Ferriss's plan sounds much more appealing to me. As he put it, retirement should be nothing more than a fail-safe in case something happens and you are physically (or mentally) incapable of working. My thoughts exactly.

My main problem with his philosophy is that it really only works if you have a product that you are not actually making, but that you can sell. For example, even if I were to quit my day job and write all day every day, I would still be working a lot. Granted, that would make my job a whole lot more portable, but I could never get away with only working four hours per week (at least not until after I sell that bestselling novel, which is such a realistic plan!) In order to do it his way, I would need to have something that is already produced, or that someone else is making (clothes, dietary supplement, etc.) where all I have to do is collect the money that comes in from those sales.

Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds. His ways of eliminating the useless from his life are really quite impressive, and not to be underestimated, but I still wonder if someone in their twenties, who is just starting out in life, can really make his plan work? Some of his success stories include people negotiating working remotely, because they have built up value in their company. Someone who has only been working at their current job for a year or two does not have the kind of leverage necessary to do that.

Additionally, he talks about the trick to getting out of your job so you can go have that great once-in-a-lifetime adventure. He mentions considering the worst-case scenario and the fact that worst-case is not necessarily all that bad. One of his points he brings up is that, if he loses his job, he can get another one fairly easily. Well, great for him, but the original book was written before the job market collapsed, followed by this lovely "jobless recovery". I was recently unemployed for eight months and it was not fun. I, too, thought I could get another job within a few months, but that did not turn out to be the case. So, if I go spend all my money on a mini-retirement now, and then come back only to find that I can't get a job for another year, I'll be screwed. Yes, even that worst-case scenario isn't that bad. I could always move back in with my parents, but I'd really rather not. I love them, but they have enough to deal with right now, and the last thing I want to do is burden the people around me because I decided to go globe-trotting for a few months. Timothy Ferriss told me it would be fine!

You might have to do some interpretation but ...

I saw a lot of reviews regarding the applicability of his advice. I will say that his tone is a pretty over the top (hence 4 and not 5 stars,) but he has some really great points. I mostly appreciate the point that you should aim to make enough money to live comfortably, doing the things that you love, and not necessarily just aim to make as much money as possible or work as hard as possible. Replace "sitting in a private jet flying over the Himalayas" with "sitting at my son's soccer game, cheering him on" or whatever it is that you want to do with your time, and his advice feels more applicable to everyone.

The concept of diversifying your income is a great one - you just have to make it your own. I first read this book several years ago, while I was still in the service, and realized that I had the possibility to apply his advice. I had bought a house, and decided I would pay it off as soon as I could so that when I transitioned out of the military it wouldn't be a liability. Instead, it's an income. It's paid off, and I rent it out. It's not enough to live on entirely, but that's not the point. It enables me to work part time and still pay my bills, while going to school for a career change. If I hadn't done that, I would have to work full time, which would leave me no time for relationships and other life-balancing things. It's not about making the big bucks, it's about making enough to enable the life you want to live. And that's a really cool idea.

About the Author
Robert J. Calvin is President of Management Dimensions, Inc an international consulting firm specializing in start-ups and early growth companies. Clients range from the Fortune 500 to the Inc. 100 and includes old and new economy firms. He also is an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship and marketing at the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business where he teaches M.B.A. courses in New Enterprise and Small Business Management and Executive Education courses in Sales Force Management. During the last 30 years, in addition to consulting, teaching and writing, Professor Calvin has bought several medium-sized businesses that were losing money, managed them back to profitability, and resold them to larger concerns. He has also started several new economy businesses. Through these experiences he has created a step-by-step proven formula for success in start-ups and early stage companies. As a teacher, consultant, entrepreneur and executive, he combines strategy and theory with tactics and implementation. Professor Calvin has written numerous books, including "Sales Management, The McGraw-Hill Executive MBA Series" which was the winner of the Soundview Award as one of the 30 best business books in 2001 and latter translated into Chinese. McGraw-Hill published his most recent book "Sales Management Demystified" in 2007. He is a visiting professor at Xiamen University School of Management in China, Chinese European International Business School (CEIBS) in Pudon, and the Bank of China's International Institute of Finance in Shanghai/Beijing. He holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. Professor Calvin sits on the advisory boards and is a director of numerous start-ups and established small businesses.

Bottomline - Profit Max Driven Results!

Gosh, I had almost given up reading ?How To? books by Top B-School Professors!
University of Chicago Professor Robert Calvin actually writes a book that (while concisely dealing with strategic decisions) gets its head out of the trendy typical pie in the sky themes and goes straight to what drives the bottom-line of the firm!
However, It should be given a new title ?Nuts and Bolts of the Entrepreneur? with subtitle ?Do you have what it takes??
I really liked the section on raising money. Calvin uses insider knowledge of the Venture Capital Trade to get directly to the point of where and where not to look for funds!
If you are serious about making money this book is for you. If you are looking for an easy million this book is not for you. This Book has little sympathy for the quick dollar schemes but is filled with enthusiasm for the nose to the grindstone types!

A Great Guide For Any Student of Small or Large Business

I give this book a definite thumbs up. It is one of the most all encompassing titles out there on this subject. It has information on writing a business plan, getting financing, motivating salespeople, motivating employees in general, proper compensation for employees, inexpensive promotion and advertising, pricing products, and a lot more. It is written on a very practical and "how to" level. This book is less about business theory and more about application. Calvin's experience in starting/buying businesses and running them is apparent. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants a hands on tactical approach to running a small or start up business - or even big business for that matter.

Most people think that all they need is a great idea and they will be able to start a successful business. Professor Calvin outlines, step-by-step, the realities of being an entrepreneur, how you need to prepare, and what you can expect. Specifically, he gives links and resources for doing market research, tells you where and how to go looking for financing, and emphasizes the key control points you must set up and monitor in order to be one of the businesses that actually makes it.
I am a consultant to start-up businesses, refer to his book often, and recommend it to my clients.

Best Jenkins Resource around!

This book is a great resource for all levels of developers that utilize Jenkins. The book is not the end to end 'Bible' for Jenkins but it's a great resource that explains pretty much all the essential building blocks. I've read the book a couple times now and I have realized that I overlooked features for didn't fully grasp how powerful they were originally. It's also wonderful to resource to help train others team members. We keep a couple copies around the office now.

Ok for a basic understanding of Jenkins

This book was a quick read and gives a fairly good understanding of the more popular plugins and setup for a Jenkins CI server(s). The book covered 90% continuous integration for maven/java projects, so be aware of that if you are planning to use other build tools/programming languages for your projects( the book does cursorily touch on using php and ruby but it's by no means definitive). That said, Jenkins isn't a difficult service to understand and book outlined as such in a concise way. I would recommend this book for someone who has no experience with Jenkins and would prefer an organized alternative to reading the online documentation. I won't give it 5 stars, however, because it's not a definitive book about Jenkins, but more beginning guide to integrate a Jenkins setup for your organizational needs.

A good starting point to get the most out of Jenkins.

Continuous Integration is, nowadays, the de facto software engineering practice that allows a team to quickly react to change and deploy safely to production, in time. Despite this, many teams out there, still ignore its benefits and dare to manually test or not to test at all their products before delivering them to the clients, which then translates into those phone calls at 2AM. Despite being, as a matter of fact, the standard in continuous integration and deployment, the literature available on Jenkins is still very limited, which partially explain why so many companies have little or no knowledge whatsoever about the subject. Jenkins: The Definitive Guide is definitely the right companion for any Build Engineer, or Software Architect, interested in learning about streamlining the build and deployment processes, making it faster for the team to both spot errors and deploy code.

Honestly, I am enthusiast about this book. Despite the fact that it mainly covers Java (see below for some critics), anyone interested in understanding how Jenkins works will find this title to be a precious guide, from installation up to administration, passing through build pipelines.

Through a simple project (again, see below for some critics), the author, with a winning learn by doing approach, shows the reader how to get everything properly configured and running. I have particularly enjoyed the quantity and quality of the images present. Each feature is clearly explained, step by step. John really makes the reader feel comfortable. The concepts are clearly presented and, page after page, they flow smoothly. The reader really feels like getting taught by a friend.

Enough with the praises. A couple of bad notes that, anyway, don’t lower the rating of this precious gem. First, the project used by the author to introduce Jenkins to us is very small. True, it is more complex that an Hello World, but the book definitely lacks real world examples. Mainly, it lacks examples on distributed scenarios.

Second, and this is not really a critic but a simply note to the readers, the book mainly focuses on Java, that is Maven and Ant. True, Jenkins is a Java application but through the years it has grown so much that now, through plugins, it can be used practically for anything, from Python to Ruby on Rails. Many chapters are dedicated purely on how to configure Jenkins for a Java project, so that, while certainly an interesting read, if the reader plans to get Jenkins to build anything that is not Java, he will most likely end up googling.

Overall a very good book. I personally do recommend it to any Build Engineer that has to take care of anything related to Java. On the other hand, this book is a little overkill if the team does work mostly with other programming languages.

PreSchool-Grade 3 This engaging book tells about a young boy's coming-of-age in an isolated rural community around the turn of the last century, and about the special baskets made by the people who live in the hills above the Hudson River. For years, the child has been eager to join his father on his monthly walk to the nearby town to sell the baskets. Pa always goes at the time of the "basket moon" (the full moon) because he needs its light to find his way home. Finally, after the boy's ninth birthday, he accompanies his father to town. He is excited by all the new things he sees there, but when a townie taunts them with "A tisket, a tasket, hillbilly basket! That's all a bushwhacker knows," he is devastated. He wants nothing further to do with basket making and wants his family to stop, too. One of his father's helpers, seeing the boy's distress, helps him to understand the artistic nature of their craft, and to value such work. The story is told by the boy in lyrical prose, and is graced by Cooney's soft-hued oil-and-acrylic paintings. The artist makes the mountains and forests glow with a suffused light that enhances their beauty and softens the family's hard life, and she artistically incorporates the various steps of basket making described in the text. An afterword explains a little of the history of these baskets and the people who made them. A luminous and deeply satisfying look back in time. A nineteenth-century boy watches his dad make baskets from the trees around their home in the hills of Columbia County, New York, and finally Pa allows the boy to go with him to sell baskets in Hudson. The boy enjoys the town, the trading, and the adventure, but when a townsman sneers at them as "hillbillies," he is ashamed and wants nothing more to do with the basket craft in his home. Children will understand the boy's longing to join Pa, his pride in the family work, and his bitter hurt at the insult; they will also feel his initial anger and rejection. How he finds affirmation is more subtle, and it is here that Cooney's quiet, beautiful paintings in oil pastel and acrylic express the essence of the story, weaving together from the first double-page spread to the last the basket maker's natural world and the work of his craft. The images combine folk art and landscape scenes in widening circles that include the round moon, the rolling hills, the path through the woods, the curling bark from the trees, and the arc of the workman's tools ("Under. The book "Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck" by Ella Smith was an outstanding biography of the great Barbara Stanwyck's career. It was a comprehensive study of the great actress Barbara Stanwyck and includes many photos from Barbara's very beginning in movies and until the end of her career in television. I admired Barbara Stanwyck very much prior to reading this book but adore her even more now. It was no coincidence that Barbara was loved so much by some of the greatest producers, directors, actors, and crews who ever lived. The book is a testament to both the professionalism and talents of Miss Stanwyck and to the class she exhibted on her many sets with everyone she was in contact with. It is apparent that the author of this book also admired this movie and televison star a great deal and wanted the world to know the reason why. Finally, I think that the ultimate compliment to the author Ella Smith of this fine book is from Barbara Stanwyck herself who states that "you made me live on pages and, lady, you did one hell of a job". This book is a must for all Barbara Stanwyck fans.

Ella Smith's coffee-table book on the career of Barbara Stanwyck is, bar none, the finest of its kind that this writer has ever read. Instead of being content to merely list Stanwyck's films and reprint old reviews (in the tradition of most "Films of" books), Ella Smith has gone the extra mile, and then some. This is because the idea originated with Smith (as opposed to a writer being "assigned" the project by a publisher), and it's entirely her baby. Smith designed the layout, selected the photographs and determined which of them would get the full page treatment (and her choices are absolutely breathtaking!)
In addition to including original reviews of Stanwyck's stage, film, and television work (as well as highlights from Stanwyck's interviews from that period) Smith personally viewed all of Stanwyck's work, and her observations are marvelously perceptive (drawing as they do on her own experience as actress, director and teacher). I was particularly pleased that she notes the powerful impact of Stanwyck's SILENT moments (whereas too many critics remember only the explosive ones). But most of all, I value the interviews Smith conducted with Stanwyck's co-stars and directors. These anecdotes are, in turn, touching and funny --- and reveal aspects of Stanwyck's personality that add greatly to the readers' regard for the woman, as well as the actress.
Of all the books written about Barbara Stanwyck, THIS is the only one worthy of her.
