Genre Blending Done Right

Desertera is a world without water, or at least without much. Imagine a steampunk world in which the steam has dried up, and the denizens are living without their technologies.

There's a huge division between the rich and the poor. The king, a despot who has set himself up as the only voice of law in the kingdom, has just married for the tenth time--the first nine wives having been executed for adultery.

Aya Cogsmith had a happy life with her father, until the day that he disappointed the king and was summarily executed. With no other family, she ended up on the streets, and eventually at The Rudder, a house ill repute doing the kind of work that "illed" the repute. Then, she gets an opportunity. A Lord approaches her with a plan to take down the king, and promises to help get back her father's old shop if she'll assist him in trapping the king.

Of course, it's more complicated than it seems on the surface. Not everyone's motivations are what they say they are. Some people's word is worth more than others. And Aya is risking her life, heart, and happiness on a chance for something better.

I really enjoyed this story. Aya was an intriguing and complicated woman, with believable motivations. Watching her navigate the intrigues of court life was fascinating, and allowed the author to show us the world without losing the story to the world-building, always a tricky balance in created-world stories like this one. There was a good balance of romance, mystery, and conspiracy. The bleakness doesn't overwhelm the hope, nor does it feel like the struggles of the characters are pushed aside too easily. Everyone, even the villains, is complex and nuanced. In this way it's a book with something for everyone.

If I have one complaint, it's that a surprise at the end was not a surprise to me. But it was a surprise to Aya--believably so--so it still worked.

Perfect Balance of Excitement, Romance and Suspense!

I really enjoyed The Cogsmith's Daughter. The steampunk world that the author creates is not only extremely well written, it is complex and beautiful.

Aya is our main character. She is an orphan who works as a sex worker in order to survive in a world where she feels like she doesn't belong. With her parents dead, she doesn't have a trade to learn and thus must work at whatever she can. I really loved Aya! She is everything you could want in a strong female roll. She is strong and determined with a clear goal but yet she is also soft and delicate. The king is easily hated. He is annoying and disgusting and I found myself wanting to punch him in the face multiple times.

Dellwyn is Aya's best friend and fellow sex worker. She helps Aya through her troubles and is there for moral support. I would have maybe liked to see a little more development of Dellwyn. We know little of her past, but this is possibly something that will come out in the rest of the series. The prince is sweet and caring and a good choice as a male hero.

I did figure out who the prince was shortly after he was presented in the story but that didn't take away from the suspense and honestly, I did second guess myself several times throughout the story. I really enjoyed all of the the foreshadowing, I have a soft spot in my heart for authors who use strategically placed hints in their writing..and if you can do it successfully (which Colby did), thats even better!

I am not a huge fan of romance plots but I found the love scenes to be not too over done. There is enough detail to understand the heat of the moment without going overboard, which I find to be an extremely difficult balance to achieve!

I would say my biggest issue (although I have not read the final product and this could have been changed) is that In the beginning you are kind of just thrown into this world without any explanation of what things are. I will admit (maybe because this isn’t a genre I read) that it took me a few pages to start to understand the terms and get a good picture of the area where it all takes place. However, once I did, I really enjoyed the story.

Overall I really enjoyed the book. I thought it had the right balance of suspense and excitement with romance.The book ends with a few unresolved issues and some hints about what could take place should a second book arise! I really look forward to reading what the author plans to do in her future works, with this story and more!

Prepare to be Swept Away!

I was instantly intrigued by the plot of The Cogsmith's Daughter and pre-ordered the book a few weeks ago. I went into it with unusually high hopes, seeing as I've never read any works by this author before. I have to say, Colby's writing did not disappoint. As the reader, you are instantly drawn into a beautifully unique world. The blending of steampunk with desert wasteland seemed to work quite well. In fact, the setting was one of my favorite things about the book. Colby does a fantastic job of drawing you into the web of her storytelling. From moment one, you can almost feel the gritty desert winds sweep you along on Aya's journey of growth and revenge. With all the intrigue, you won't want to put the book down till it's finished, and probably not even after that! The only issue I have is I really wanted to know what was behind that blasted door, and I thought for sure a certain important item would open it. Oh well. I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next book to see where it leads!

The best triathlon training book

I bought many books last year (2012) since my wife told me that she wanted to do a full triathlon race this year (2013). Before 2013, her races are limited to few marathons, 50Ks, and 1 double marathon. She has never done any real triathlon race - meaning no swim and bike background. Her marathon PR was 3:24 - so now you know her athletic ability to judge how the training turned out to be.

The Triathlete's Training Bible
Be Iron Fit by Don Fink
Ironman Start to Finish, 24 Weeks to an Endurance Triathlon
Iron Planner
Training Plans for Multisport Athletes
Complete Triathlon Book by Matt Fitzgerald
Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide by Matt Fitzgerald

In addition, I bought some biking related books and other swimming related books.

If you are going to buy just one book, I recommend "Your Best Triathlon" above anything else - that is if you are going to use the heart zone, pace zone, and power zone related training. If you aren't interested in using any of those, you can just use Matth Fitzgerald's Essential Week-by-Week, but I found it not very much helping if you are serious about the training. My wife told me that she wanted to finish her first full triathlon race within 12 hours.

I believe that "Your Best Triathlon" is a much better book than the classic, "the Triathlete's Training Bible" by the same author. It pretty much explains everything you need to know along with a sample workout plan that you can use... providing you know your zone, etc. I used the book as the foundation for the training plan, then changed a bit here and there as needed.

Here are the results:
Olympic Triathlon in May (her first open water): 2:59:39 - a bad race... it was a cold day and she wasn't ready for a cold water swim, a cold bike ride, and a cold run....
Sprint Triathlon in June: 1:46:48
1/3 distance Triathlon: 3:17:29 - she took 2nd place overall female.
Ironman Half in July: 5:17:19 - she took 7 in her age group, 60 in female, and 310 in overall.
Full Rev3 in September: 11:15:56 - She took 1st in her age group - (there were 2 female in her age group faster than she was, but they took 2nd and 3rd overall female), 5th in female overall.

Here is the stat on her full-tri:
Swim: 1:13:59
Bike: 6:07:44
Run: 3:42:24

I am going to use this book again next year to improve her time. My recommendation for biking book is Training and Racing with a Power Meter by Hunter Allen.

Fantastic!!!

Subsurface Illumination

I knew nothing worth knowing about GPR for Archaeology and the fear of unknown is now dispelled. It is a good grounding if you ever do get to invest in a very expensive machine on the market in 2014 and I am sure there is a big difference between theory and practice but can't wait to be able to get my hands on one just to prove that my dowsing is not a figment of my imagination.As a reference book it must be hard to beat.

Best of the Douglas biographies

By way of introduction, I've read most of the biographical material on Douglas as well as his writings. There have been six biographies written about him, and this is the best of the bunch. Here they are:

The first was by his friend and mentor, William Jackson Hooker, and was published soon after Douglas' untimely death under the title "A Brief Memoir of the Life of Mr. David Douglas, with Extracts from His Letters." This work is available free on the internet and I highly recommend it. It's brief, sympathetic, and hits the high points.

Perhaps because Douglas' journals went unpublished until 1914, and then were put out only in an expensive limited edition, he did not attract another biographer until 1947 when H.T. Hervey published "Douglas of the fir: a biography of David Douglas, botanist." This was an excellent work, and the later biographies repeat much material first presented by Hervey. It is long out of print and you will likely have to get it through a library.

The third Douglas biography is more of a curiosity than a work of reference; it contains much wild speculation that is unsupported or actually contradicted by the historical evidence, and overall seems to be an effort to turn Douglas' life into a pulp romance. Among other things it reveals that Douglas had a passionate affair with a dusky native lass on the shores of distant Gray's Harbor. You can read this and more in W. Morwood's Traveler in a vanished landscape;: The life and times of David Douglas.

Next up was DOUGLAS OF THE FORESTS. THE NORTH AMERICAN JOURNALS OF DAVID DOUGLAS by John Davies, which mostly consists of excerpts from Douglas' journals but also covers some biographical ground. It's a decent work, but mostly of interest because Douglas' own journals have only been published in rare and expensive limited editions (fortunately they can also be downloaded for free on the Internet).

After that we had David Douglas: Explorer and Botanist by Ann Lindsay, reissued a few years later under the title The Tree Collector: The Life and Explorations of David Douglas. Regrettably, it was not well fact-checked, and contains numerous false statements that betray the authors' general lack of familiarity with either botany or the geography of western North America, but which also contains some interesting facts which were not earlier published, and are revealed in the writings of Douglas' contemporaries.

The best came last, though: Jack Nisbet's "The Collector" easily displaces Hervey's work as the best Douglas biography, for it was prepared by a modern, rigorous historian with access to a breadth of material and interpretation that the earlier authors could not reach. Moreover, Nisbet has previously written a good number of books on the region's history and, apart from the synergistic effects on this research effort, it has allowed him to develop as a capable and engaging writer. It contains information not discovered by any prior writer, such as the news that Douglas had a son during his travels in the Pacific Northwest; it also does a far better job than any prior biography of placing Douglas within the society of his contemporaries both on the frontier and in the world of London's Linnean Society. Highly recommended.

A Fine Read

A fine read for anyone interested in Pacific Northwest botany, fur trade history, and/or -ethnography. Plant life appears as if on a spring walk in the countryside, along with fun and fascinating related information. Hudson Bay and other historical personages delight at the turn of a page or the floating a river -- folks like John Work, Jaco Finlay, Samuel Black, Donald McKenzie, Edward Ermatinger --all observed by David Douglas in their natural habitats as well. Forts Vancouver, Okanogan, Colville, Spokane House, and several others make their appearance, connected by exciting travel on the rivers of the Northwest. The ethnographer will enjoy as well the many bits of Indian culture sprinkled throughout the book. All of these delicious details are wrapped in the passion of Douglas' life wandering far-flung landscapes in search of botanical discoveries.

The author makes extensive use of supporting documents, especially Douglas' own journals. These journals impart to the book a steady pace, which sometimes begs for a bit of literary disruption. But again, a fine read, well researched and well written, and a welcome addition to any bookshelf.

There are three linear linear algebra textbooks which must be studied cover to cover by any serious student of mathematics and theoretical physics. This book is one of the three. The other two books are "Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces" by Paul Halmos which should be read first and the last one is Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Peter Lax which should be read after Kostrikin-Manin's book. The book is lucidly written and well motivated by the very sources of subjects. Nowhere is this motivation better than in the chapter 2 "Geometry of Spaces with Inner Products" which uses Quantum Mechanics to motivate study of Unitary spaces and theory of Self-Adjoint operators, the very reason the whole machinery was developed by Hilber, John von Neumann, and the followers. If I could wish for one thing in this book that would be to have more problems but since in Russian mathematical tradition the book of problems are published separately this is to be expected. If you are looking for a numerical methods in linear algebra this review is irrelevant for you. Please check out the Lloyd's "Numerical Linear Algebra".

I believe that this would be a valuable edition to any mathematical library, public or private, and I know that I myself have this as one of my favorites. Completely wonderful!

Useful book for practical work on vibration and acoustics

I work as acoustic consultant, primarily with noise and vibration simulation.
I recommend the book as it has helped me out on a few occasions where I needed to look into new things with which I had not previously worked. It is also useful when there is a need to reference matters you are familiar with, but want the detailed equations or the background assumptions restated.
Having to solve practical problems, I especially appreciate that the author includes references to other work and, more importantly lists `rules of thumbs' that lead to sensible designs. Such recommendations have saved valuable time and money for me.
So, the scope of the book goes beyond that of teaching. It is quite a useful book also for practical work.

Exceptionally well written, good as a supplementary text

This is Fahy's "Introductory" Acoustics text. He has several other publications in vibration and vibroacoustics (structural acoustics) that establish him as one of the more prolific current authors for acoustics curriculum.

As a graduate student, I find that Fahy's writing style really helps explain what is physically happening in basic acoustic scenarios, such as plane waves, spherical waves, scattering, refraction, reflection, sound in waveguides, sources of sound, etc. The writing is both interesting and fluent. In this manner, It is a nearly perfect companion text to other introductory texts who may favor a more equation-driven approach (such as the standards of Kinsler & Frey or Pierce). Fahy has some unique features in this book, including a list of possible experiments to demonstrate acoustic concepts (some experiments are mediocre, some are really good if you have an FFT analyzer handy).

That being said, the end-of-chapter questions are limited but thoughtful (usually fewer than 10 per chapter). There may be a slight favor towards structural acoustics rather than other fields. Notably absent are sections on hearing perception and applications in underwater acoustics. Again, no text can be perfect, but this is a great companion text to understand basic concepts in acoustics.

This textbook was helpful in communicating the basic principles of engineering acoustics. Several errors, (k^2 missing in numerator of equation 6.14, page 109) but generally a good reference when coupled with good teaching. Includes around 8-10 problems after each chapter with solutions in the back.

The Power of Good, With Reality a Bit Suspended

I was just 6 years old when The Untouchables series began running on television, but I have vague memories of the noirish feel of the series and the expressionless, determined face of Robert Stack as Eliot Ness. Kevin Costner's Ness never really took the place of that neo-human hero of the late fifties and early sixties, in atmospheric black and white.

My impression of Ness's own story, told in this book, is close to that mythological Ness. The book feels more like a novel than a modern autobiography. I've heard that Ness exaggerates his own role in the events he describes -- I don't know whether that's true or not. But the narrative is smoother than real life. Ness radiates a kind of all-conquering goodness, enhanced with clever tactics and the loyalty of an equally incorruptible team. Good conquers evil, because, well, good is just so . . . good.

We can fault Ness for self-aggrandizing myth making. But, setting that aside, it's fun reading. Ness is a man on a mission. He rejects the corrupt peace that the police and the criminals, most notably of course, Al Capone, have reached. The police force and prohibition agents are ruined by "bad apples" -- the fatal moral weakness that allows Capone and others to rule Chicago in the twenties and thirties. Ness devises a simple plan, a "small select squad" with "no bad apples" -- a team whose greatest strength is its moral incorruptibiity.

As the team goes to work, busting breweries and distribution networks, the bootleggers realize that this is a different game. They can't buy victory, they'll have to outfight and outmaneuver Ness's team. But Ness's team is as determined to bust them as they are to make money and build power. When the bootleggers adopt new tactics, Ness and his team figure out new ways to defeat them. It really is a good story, and the good guys win.

I do have to mention one odd departure from the facts in the book. Betty Andersen appears in the book as Ness's girlfriend, and, in the book's Epilogue, Ness's co-author, Oscar Fraley, notes that she later became his wife. There is no mention of Edna Staley, who was actually Ness's wife during the time covered by the book. Ness and Betty Andersen did marry, but only after his divorce from his second wife, Evaline Ness, in 1946. We can only suspect that this cleaned-up version of his personal life is not the only cleaning up of the facts in the story that Ness tells.

The story makes better reading if we accept that the truth may have suffered a bit, or more than a bit, in the telling.

Nice follow-up to Fraley & Ness's book

This is an interesting tale, well told. Fraley certainly had the knack of getting these stories down on paper. His co-author and subject, Paul Robsky was one of the "Untouchables", immortalized on TV by Robert Stack as Eliot Ness. Ness's own story is covered by Fraley's previous book, "The Untouchables".

In this version of the story, Eliot is merely another one of the Untouchables, not the leader. Eliot is the go-between for communications from the US Attorney General and the Untouchables. Mostly they worked in pairs, pursuing their own line of investigation into the bootlegging industry.

In the one story where Eliot and Paul both appear (the tapping of phones at Capone's hotel), the two stories pretty much match up. Otherwise Paul doesn't really mention Eliot much.

This is a well-written story about a time that's getting harder and harder to imagine as it recedes into the past. A real slice of history.

Ex-cop on cop history

I have the tv series and had been looking for a copy of this book since I was in school and watching the tv show as a child.I found the book to be very interesting and after receiving it I had to make myself stop reading it so as to eat,sleep,and work.I read the intire book in three days,it was that interesting.I also have all of the Dragnet series and the Untouchable's series along with all the Adam-12 series that have been released that I know of.
