A good hand book

I bought this and a couple of other books while looking for alternative methods to deal with calculations for a submerged broad crested weir. This book offered not only a method for analyzing it, but a great reference on weirs in general, and that is just one chapter of many.

Whereas most texts cover weirs in, at most, a few pages, this book devotes a quite useful chapter. Note that you must read the whole chapter to get the definitions of the variables, which are scattered throughout, but are consistent throughout. It also requires some informed thought to sort through to what is most significant to the task at hand. I am not sure how it would work as a text book as I flipped immediately to the chapter I wanted, but it definitely works as a hand book.

There are some USBR manuals that can be downloaded which are also useful, but this book provides a good background and roundup of information from around the world. It looks like one of those essential additions to my hydraulics library.

Excellent hydraulic engineering reference

This book is all about the hydraulic engineering of open channel flows. It covers basic hydraulics, as well as unsteady flow situations.
The text starts with a review of the basic principles of fluid mechanics, then continue with the flow resistance calculations. The 5th chapter marks the start of the high-expertise engineering material covered in the next 9 chapters. Each section is well-documented and it becomes obvious that the author, Dr Sergio Montes, is himself a world expert in hydraulic engineering.
Except for one chapter (Chap. 12) on air entrainment that I found outdated, I enjoyed genuinely the book and I have already made good use of several parts. In my opinion, this book is the perfect reference for postgraduate students and hydraulic engineers working actively in the field.

The book you didn't know you need

Impressive book on Open Channel Flows. Contains the classical outlook and some "new" and fresh approaches (let's make it clear that it is dated from 1998 anyway). I bought it following references of Dr. Castro-Orgaz in his papers and public suggestion of Prof. Chanson on Amazon and it has been a very positive surprise.

Major drawback? The price. Mine is second-hand.. But after checking, I would consider even a new acquisition.

Jerome was the greatest biblical scholar of the ancient Latin church, and his Commentary on Galatians is one of the crowning achievements of his illustrious career. It far outclasses the five other contemporary Latin commentaries on Galatians in its breadth of classical and patristic erudition, Hebrew and Greek textual criticism of the Bible, and expository thoroughness. It is unique also because it is the only one of the Latin commentaries to make the Greek exegetical tradition its main point of reference. Jerome's Commentary in fact preserves, in one form or another, a treasure-trove of otherwise lost Greek exegesis, particularly Origen's Commentary on Galatians, from which he worked very closely when composing his own work.

Jerome's Commentary on Galatians is presented here in English translation in its entirety. The introduction and notes situate the Commentary in its historical, exegetical, and theological contexts and also provide extensive coverage of ancient and modern scholarly debates about the interpretation of Paul's epistle.

Best Tung book currently available

This book has made the rounds in my Acupuncture office and every single person, even non-Tung style practitioners, have fallen in love with it. The explanations are concise and illuminating; however, it's the appendix that make this worth its weight in gold. This is the first book I've found which is specifically designed for quick look-ups in the reference section for all types of western medical AND TCM pattern conditions. You don't have to hunt and peck through text to find what point may treat what conditions; it's clearly laid out. Each point has a discussion as to why it works and there are even "special recommendations" which include references to how other well-known practitioners (Miriam Lee, Susan Johnson, Young, etc) use the points in their own practices.

A book that fits our period perfectly! Do not be put off by the number of pages, the 'rules section is only eight pages long, but covers the mechanics of playing a game using figures from 2 to 42mm size. They are simply presented and easy to use, indeed I have already used the format in preparing the rules used at our game at Salute. Neil is no novice at wargame rules, having written books on 'Ancient and Medieval Wargaming' and 'Napoleonic Wargaming'. He writes in a clear and readable style giving background information where needed and giving the reader options to develop his (or her) own way of playing the game. Worth getting

Book Review of Neil Thomas's Wargaming 19th Century Europe 1815-1878 published 2012 by Pen and Sword Books.

As the editor of many of wargaming books (some mentioned in the bibliography), I was asked by the publisher to do a review of this new book.

The book is set out in a fairly standard format for such wargaming books as first devised by Featherstone in his writings. A chapter outlining political and military developments, a chapter explaining the rationale of the rules, a set of simple rules, examples of types of battle (e.g. meeting engagement, flanking attack), some army lists and nine historical battles.

For me, one of the most interesting chapters is the one of Nineteenth- Century Wargaming. This aims to outline the reasoning behind the rules in the next chapter. It does this well, but like all wargamers, I always contest the writings of others on wargaming. For example the idea that, `A more serious problem with a system of simultaneous turns, is its lack of realism', is clearly not defensible from the military perspective (otherwise there would be never be any `meeting engagements' in the history of warfare). There are however, very sensible reasons to design wargames with alternative movement systems, such as to prevent disputes. The writer's apparent views on leadership systems in wargaming as unnecessary could also be an area for discussion.

The wargaming rules are at unit level, with infantry units having four bases, are straightforward and contained within just 8 pages. Morale is tested when a unit loses a base from firing, is a charging cavalry unit under fire or it has lost a melee. A D6 is rolled against the unit class or the unit loses a base e.g. an average unit needs 4, 5 or 6 on a D6 to avoid losing a base.

The wargame scenario chapter has some interesting rules to add flavour to the type of battle. E.g. in the rearguard scenario, the attacker rolls 3-6 on a D6 per turn for the next attacker unit to arrive.

The rest of the book consists of synopsis of various battles, with suggestions how to turn them into wargaming actions.

The book is a good read for a wargamer. I enjoyed the sections on the design decisions for the rules and have used the chapters on the various battles. I tried out the rules in several solo games and found they were straightforward and produce a fun game suitable for an evening's entertainment. The book is worth getting.

Excellent Introduction to the Wargaming this Period

This is my third purchase of a Wargaming book by Neil Thomas (I also own "Wargaming: An Introduction" and "Ancient and Medieval Wargaming"). Personally, I like Thomas's rule books. The rules are simple, straightforward, and logical. They are good rules, IMO, for beginners, or for veterans who appreciate a very streamlined approach to rules writing. If you fall into one of these categories, there is a good chance you will appreciate these rules. If you prefer more complex rule systems, you will want to look elsewhere.

In addition to the rules, Thomas offers a variety of scenarios – 5 that are "generic" ("Pitched Battle," "Meeting Engagement," "Rearguard Action," "Flank Attack," "The Minigame"), and about 10 that are historical. Thomas also discusses at length his take on the period's warfare and the rationale behind his rules, special scenario conditions, and so forth. Combined with the scenarios, this discussion may make the book a worthwhile resource if you are new to the period, even if you ultimately opt not to use Thomas' rules.

NOTE REGARDING NUMBERS OF UNITS:

Numbers of units ARE given in the kindle edition (which I own), and are NOT MISSING, as one earlier reviewer states. However, the numbers of units are provided in the SCENARIOS section of the book, not in the Army Lists. The Army Lists provide only the details on quality, equipment, etc. of the units in question (and in truth, this manner of organizing things is not entirely obvious on an initial perusal of the book).

For example, if you are playing the "Pitched Battle" Scenario, you roll a die and consult a table to determine the composition of your force. Let's say you roll a "3," indicating that you get 5 infantry units, 1 skirmisher unit, 2 cavalry units and 2 artillery units, regardless of the specific army you are playing. You then consult the Army Lists, for your specific army to determine if your infantry consists of, say, Elite troops armed with rifled muskets, or Levy troops armed with smooth-bored muskets, or Average troops with breech-loading rifles, etc.

In a nutshell – don't panic when you first glance at the army lists and don't see numbers of units given. Remember that the numbers you need are in the scenarios section.

Neil Thomas' book is excellent for a number of reasons:

1) The rules are brief, easy to understand and focus on key elements of the 1815-1878 period of warfare in Europe.
2) Thomas provides a lengthy chapter of designers notes before the rules, explaining his reasons for the design choices he made in light of the practice of warfare during this period.
3) The book begins with a well-written overview of the history of the period, focusing on warfare but paying particular attention to political, social and technological changes that were taking place and how they directly impacted warfare in post-Napoleonic Europe.
4) Army lists for European armies from most of the major and minor conflicts of the era
5) 5 generic scenarios for fighting typical types of battles. The scenarios require only small armies (5 to 10 units per side) and small areas (4'x3' or 2'x2' areas)
6) The book includes 8 or 9 historical scenarios and after action reports, demonstrating how the rules can be used to replay historical actions and how well they do at it.

An all-around excellent wargames book, one of the best I've read.
