The Fascinating tale of The Leather Man Unveiled

I grew up roaming the same woods that the Leather Man shuffled through one hundred years earlier. As a young man we would visit his caves, read and tell tales of his adventures, whether embellished by us or not, his story was always fascinating. "The Old Leather Man: Historical Accounts of a Connecticut and New York Legend" is an incredible assemblage of newspaper, personal and photographic first hand documentations of this mysterious historical figure. Dan W. DeLuca's obvious years of research and passion for the subject is plainly evident in the thoroughness and completeness that he brings to this biographic accounting of an enigmatic, almost mythical person dead some 130 years. DeLuca puts to rest Victorian embellishments to this lonely man's legend and attempts in the end to construct a more truthful picture of who the Leather Man really was. Great reading for anyone interested in New England history, a closer bond with the dark forested hills and tales of silent wanderers therein who's real identity we will probably never know.

Interesting Compilation of Leatherman Stories

The Leatherman was a tramp who walked a regular route in Connecticut and New York between the Connecticut and Hudson Rivers in the late 1880s. What made the Leatherman different from other tramps is that he wore a handmade suit of leather and he followed a regular 365-mile route for a six-year period. What makes the Leatherman mysterious is that little is known about him as a person, including where he was born, what was his name, and why he walked this route. His New York death certificate, which DeLuca shows in the book, estimates him to be 50 years of age, and says his name was "Known by the Leatherman."
DeLuca reprints four different newspaper accounts by four different authors assigning four different names to the Leatherman, each claiming they got the Leatherman to tell his story. Considering that most people reported the Leatherman said almost nothing, and would get entirely quiet or move away if people asked him personal questions, and the fact that these stories contradict each other, it is safe to say that no one knows his real name, place of origin, or why he chose to live this way. Regrettably, one name has stuck in the public consciousness as his "true" name, even though the writer later admitted in newspaper accounts that the story was a complete fabrication. That name was placed on a headstone by the Leatherman's grave in May 1953, and remained there until DeLuca got it changed in May 2011 to "The Leatherman." I am not writing the false name because doing so would only perpetuate its use in the public mind.
This book represents a culmination of decades of research by DeLuca in which he presents transcriptions of articles from mostly defunct newspapers that he obtained by reading microfilm in libraries and historical societies. In one account, the Leatherman was asked how old he was and wrote the figures "15342", which would be the European way of writing March 15, 1842. If this was truly his birth date, which is a reasonable supposition in my opinion as it matches his age in photos, that would make him 47 when he died in 1889. In the two-page preface, DeLuca explains that he did not try to write a history of the Leatherman, but only to chronicle his life through select newspaper articles, documents, and photographs. I do wish he had written a more extensive preface in which he tied together elements of the Leatherman's life.
I saw DeLuca give two presentations in 2011 about the Leatherman and his book. In those presentations, he explained that he wanted to publish a book on the Leatherman, based on his available research, because others had compiled information on the Leatherman, and then died before they wrote a book or could get it published. He said he is working on a second book about the Leatherman. In his talk, he mentioned the May 2011 relocation of the grave within Sparta Cemetery in Ossining, NY, along with the change in headstones from the incorrect name to one that simply says "The Leatherman." The book represents more than just the chronicle of one man's life, as it contains a series of old photographs and maps from the era. For someone who spent his life as a tramp, his activities were certainly well chronicled, as evidenced by numerous newspaper accounts.
There are assorted "Leatherman's Caves" in Connecticut, which by Connecticut standards is not an underground tunnel, but a cluster of rocks with an overhang. The best cave, and the best-known cave is on the Mattatuck Trail in Thomaston, near the junction with the Jericho Trail. Two things I would hope will appear in the second book: a comprehensive list of the caves and where they are located, along with a detailed map of the route the Leatherman followed. The 1984 public television documentary about the Leatherman called "The Road Between Heaven and Hell" is readily available online. The documentary is generally factual, but does mention the most popular false name as being possibly the real name, and shows the now former headstone with that name on it.

Compelling Local History

As a kid I had heard about the "leather man's caves". I've always been a fan of hiking and the outdoors, and for a long time I thought the leather man was just something that adults made up to play around with kids - so I was totally psyched to find this book. It's an amazing collection of information about one of history's most unique individuals. If you're into this type of thing at all, check this book out!

The only bummer is that there's no complete map detailing the leather man's route.

interesting information, very poorly written

This is an interesting book that makes a very convincing case that Marilyn Monroe was murdered at the behest of Robert Kennedy (and as explained in a "bonus" chapter, that he himself was murdered by three gunmen, including at least one associated with prominent right-wing CIA people). It's just too bad the book is so poorly written.

There is very little narrative thread to this book, which instead reads like a random dump from a reporter's notebook. There are lots of repeated statements, statements presented without context, and random sequencing of information and claims.

A look at just the first two paragraphs of the whole book will give a great sense of the problem:

"In 1983, Peter Lawford discussed his friend Marilyn Monroe at length with biographer C. David Heymann for the latter's biography on Jackie Kennedy. Apparently, out of deep guilt (he had always held himself responsible for her death), Lawford conceded to having been part of a conspiracy to murder Marilyn Monroe, labeling himself a co-conspirator along with his brother-in-law Bobby Kennedy and Marilyn's psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson. The secret was kept all these years and the public was deceived into believing that Monroe's death was accidental.

"Natalie Trundy, Jacobs' twenty-one-year-old girlfriend at the time, told biographer Anthony Summers that shortly after 10:30 p.m., Arthur 'went to Marilyn's house, and I don't think I saw him for two days. He had to fudge the press.' Marilyn's close friend and former publicist, Rupert Allan, told biographers Harry Brown and Patte Barham, 'It was carefully done and beautifully executed ... It was decided to play up the "accidental death" scenario but none of us believed it.' "

OK, there's some really juicy stuff there, but these two paragraphs present three separate and seemingly unrelated partial accounts of circumstances surrounding Monroe's death. What is the relationship between these three accounts? Does it matter? Who is Natalie Trundy, and what is her significance to the story? And who the hell are "Jacobs" (no first name given) and "Arthur" (no last name given)? Are they one and the same person? Good luck trying to piece all of this stuff together into a coherent picture!

Say goodbye…….

Wow…….this book is packed with details and new information on what really happened on the last day of Marilyn's life. Shocking and sad. When will people stop saying she committed suicide ? Many people, including policemen at the scene, ambulance workers , her publicist Pat Newcomb,and Peter Lawford KNEW she was murdered. Most shocking of all is Marilyn's betrayal by the person she trusted the most…..her analyst Dr. Ralph Greenson. The biggest betrayal of them all.

Save Your Money...Poor Written and Closes Nothing

I'm not sure what the people who gave this 5 stars were reading. I am guessing they are die hard's or something, because for me this book was a strain on my endurance. First of all the book is 169 pages, but remove all of the continuously repeated statements, it would end up being maybe 120 pages. Then add to this the name drops all over the book. It becomes so confusing that I literally found myself having to go back and forth just to remember who was who at times. Then there is the time line that jumps all over the place in this book and chapter titles that seem out of place. Then there are pictures referenced that are in the book and others referenced, important ones, not included in the book which leaves the reader asking why? For instance why is there a picture in the book of a smear on the wall, then the same without the smear, but at no time does the author address this in the book?

And then there is the "Case Closed" aspect of it. If anything this book leaves more questions than answers. It places a lot of weight behind two main witnesses, an ambulance driver and Lawford. First the ambulance driver, who refused to give his story without being paid, and paid on numerous occassions. Hell if I were getting $10,000 a pop to tell my story I'd jump at the chance also. The book references how many lie detector tests he took, but as we all know, lie detectors are not used in court because they are unreliable. Then there is Lawford, who gives his account later in his life and by this time he is a broken drunken wreck. Two witnesses any prosecutor worth his weight would not rely upon to make their case. Then there are the cops who come forward at about the same time people are banking on any Marilyn story. Again, true or false, no prosecutor would use them.

And thus is the jist of the story...NO CASE WAS EVER BROUGHT. None of this is new information as referenced in the book. Much of it goes back to the days after the event, 1972, and 1982, yet no LA DA has brought a case. Do I think there is evidence of murder? Sure. Does this book make a convincing case of RFK's involvement? Kind of at best, but with WAY TOO MANY HOLES. And at times the author's only rebuttal to witnesses that oppose the narrative are "There are obviously misunderstanding the evidence," or "They were close to the Kennedy family." Fair enough, but you need to provide more than that to "Close" a case.

Rarely have I said this, but I honestly regret making the investment in this book. It is just so poorly written and just doesn't lead anywhere convincing enough. It just comes across as hastily written and in needed of a couple of rounds with he editors pen. Save your money on this one is my only advice because less than half way in all you will be asking yourself is, "Why did I buy this."

Best addition to series yet!

This is the best addition to this series yet! I'm not usually into medical play, but the scenes in this book are smoking hot. I also like this small shifts in the dynamic between Connor and Damion as Connor realizes he does have some power in this relationship. I'm also intrigued by the hints about Connor's past, and can't wait to read more.

Sadism is not sexual dominance!

The author oversteps the lines of an alpha dominant master's demonstration of ownership of his slave, as he revels in the denial of food to a street urchin. The book is neither well-written nor sexually-stimulating. There is only a remote storyline and the characters are plastic and radically under-developed. The books are an obviating of this man's unworthiness to be deemed an author. Perhaps he might reconsider his line of work.
