A little treasure of a book that nobody else seems to have bought? It's very cute, the instructions are clearly written and there are some good ideas and tips in it. This analysis of what makes great companies great has been hailed everywhere as an instant classic and one of the best business titles since In Search of Excellence. The authors, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras, spent six years in research, and they freely admit that their own preconceptions about business success were devastated by their actual findings--along with the preconceptions of virtually everyone else.

Built to Last identifies 18 "visionary" companies and sets out to determine what's special about them. To get on the list, a company had to be world famous, have a stellar brand image, and be at least 50 years old. We're talking about companies that even a layperson knows to be, well, different: the Disneys, the Wal-Marts, the Mercks.

Whatever the key to the success of these companies, the key to the success of this book is that the authors don't waste time comparing them to business failures. Instead, they use a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies to highlight what's special about their 18 "visionary" picks. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, Hewlett Packard to Texas Instruments, and so on.

The core myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies must start with a great product and be pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. There are examples of that pattern, they admit: Johnson & Johnson, for one. But there are also just too many counterexamples--in fact, the majority of the "visionary" companies, including giants like 3M, Sony, and TI, don't fit the model. They were characterized by total lack of an initial business plan or key idea and by remarkably self-effacing leaders. Collins and Porras are much more impressed with something else they shared: an almost cult-like devotion to a "core ideology" or identity, and active indoctrination of employees into "ideologically commitment" to the company.

The comparison with the business "B"-team does tend to raise a significant methodological problem: which companies are to be counted as "visionary" in the first place? There's an air of circularity here, as if you achieve "visionary" status by ... achieving visionary status. So many roads lead to Rome that the book is less practical than it might appear. But that's exactly the point of an eloquent chapter on 3M. This wildly successful company had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were both keen to see the company succeed and unafraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works." --Richard Farr

This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

A Must Read for the CEO

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.

Summarizing the basic themes:

* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time
* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible
* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core
* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignment

Unlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

picture a vision for your own unique case harnessed with verified principles...

It is not a how-to book. It is not suggesting receipes for your own case to succeed. Rather it is explaining what visinoary companies did different than control group companies (still remarkably successfull compared to sectoral averages). You need to extract your lessons which suits to your spesific case.
I believe that this a good approach. It acknowledges that your case is unique. It also recognizes yourself as capable and willing to progress, hence inspires you about possible vision. In case you need to be convinced you could follow cases or quotations from the research.
This is another good feature because you have the chance to skip sections that %100 agree with author. It makes you fast to read whole book.
I like the coinciding ideas of visionary companies and TOC literature. You could find marks of Blue Ocean Strategies as well in the book.
I feel energized and motivated to feel "do something, now, I can, no need tobe CEO!"

A keepsake

I also took a chance on this via Kickstarter and am very glad I did. Many of the photographs are spellbinding - they may not be the best 'war' photographs I've ever seen, but they are easily the best 'soldiering' photographs I've ever seen. My education on WW I is less than complete, but I find it mesmerizing that Walter Koessler could have survived so much of the war, and could have had many varied experiences - trenches, aviation, artillery, destroyed cities, watercolors! - and could have so thoroughly and beautifully documented it all.

I understand that this collection was a Koessler/Putney family keepsake that could easily have never seen the light of day. I'm grateful that Mr. Putney recognized its cultural value and put the time and effort into getting this into wide distribution (and from his Kickstarter campaign it is clear that he had an absolute blast doing so!). I think this is the type of book my grandchildren will one day be marveling at, and I couldn't recommend it more.

Viewing World War I Through a German Officer's Photos

I am a self-admitted Kickstarter addict but usually my addiction is limited to supporting various board games. Lucky for me though I happened to see Dean Putney’s project that asked for support in getting his Great-Grandfather’s personal photo album printed. His Great-Grandfather was Walter Koessler, a German officer in World War I. Walter was a photographer and at a time when cameras were rare, spent time during the war taking pictures of his WWI experiences. Not only is it remarkable that Walter took these pictures, but that he recorded them in a photo album that was kept and passed down through his family for the last century makes it really special.

Reading and looking through Walter’s album is very much like opening a window into a world that is very foreign to many Americans. Most significant, Walter is a German and his album is from a perspective we seldom see or study in-depth in America.
So, what does this large 11x17 coffee table book contain? It is Walter’s story and it is told through a thousand amazing and beautiful images, from life in the trenches to his photographic reconnaissance in an airplane. Putney has faithfully recreated Walter’s entire photo album. Each page contains photos that tell a story—early pages show young men having fun, later pages reveal death and destruction.

This book is not a history book. You will not learn new facts or be able to pass a test on WWI after thumbing through the book. Rather this book is about the images. The idea that a picture is worth a thousand words came to mind when I read through the book. I do not know Walter, any of his photo subjects but I am still fascinated by his photo album. I wish more family stories related to the photos had been passed down and included in the book. However, I am content with the photo album as is. One of the series of images that fascinated me the most was of the St. Quentin Cathedral in France. These photos show a city decimated with the outline of the Cathedral apparent.

Perhaps one of the great appeals of Walter’s photo album is not just that it documents the experiences of a man on the opposing side, but that it simply exists. In a world where folks are quick to take a selfie or use only their phone as a camera, I wonder how our descendants will be able to view our lives when we leave no printed photographic evidence. Walter’s photo album is not just special because it’s of a time and place that we study, but it shows how amazing a photo album can be when passed from one generation to the next.

Perfect for Lovers of History

I am a high school teacher and one of my main goals is to make history personal. There are so many stories of history that each student has in their own families that are just waiting to get out. I have learned incredible things about family, world, and US history from family history of my students.

When I ran across this book, it completely fell in with my personal beliefs. Here is a treasure trove of family history that is part of a mosaic of world history and it hadn't been widely shared. The photos make history come alive. The pictures are clear and share a fascinating story.

Only concern is that the book is so large that is had some warping issues when it arrived. I believed it was jostled and inverted in shipping which led to the cover being somewhat warped. It was not significant and I have laid it flat with books on top to get its shape back.

I have discussed this book in a review of the paperback edition, in which I addressed some of the issues raised by previous reviewers. In this review I will point out some other characteristics of interest to possible readers.

This is an adventure novel, set during the reign of Xerxes, Originally published in 1961, it was the third written, and earliest in chronological order, of five loosely-related historical novels. The others are: "An Elephant for Aristotle" (1958), in the reign of Alexander the Great, involving a trek across Asia with a rather large gift for the philosopher; "The Bronze God of Rhodes" (1960), in which the background is the struggle among Alexander's successors, with the construction of the Colossus of Rhodes only one of the incidents; "The Arrows of Hercules" (1965), a story of war and military inventions in the time of Plato; and, finally, "The Golden Wind" (1969), concerning sea-borne trade and exploration in Hellenistic times.

"Dragon" is probably closest in mood to de Camp's fantasy novels, while "Bronze God" and "Arrows" are closer to his science fiction, with their description of engineering problems, and personality clashes among researchers and engineers. "Dragon" also reflects de Camp's then-recent acquaintance with the Conan stories and other works of Robert E. Howard. Bessas, the huge Persian nobleman, is not only a close match for Conan in physique, but his mood swings, fixation on his mother, and tendency to toss off verses, seems a reflection of Howard himself. (Fortunately, his poems reflect de Camp's verbal dexterity and wit, not Howard's melancholy.)

Earlier editions include the original Doubleday hardcover, and a paperback edition from long-defunct Lancer Books (which also published most of de Camp's editions of the Conan stories). The illustrated edition is perhaps the most desirable, but readers who love high adventure, exotic locales, authentic detail, and more than a little humor, will enjoy it in any format.

Ian Myles Slater on History as Heroic Romance

I will try to keep this short and factual, despite my enthusiasm for a book I have admired for over thirty years.

This is one of a series of loosely-linked historical novels set mainly on the margins of the classical world (from India to the interior and coasts of Africa), and covering the period from the reign of Xerxes to late Hellenistic times. (Think in terms of the Battle of Salamis to the rise of Rome). They all share de Camp's meticulous detail, plausible characterization, and sense of the comic side of human nature. Readers familiar with de Camp as Robert E, Howard's posthumous editor and collaborator will find in them the same mix of exotic adventure and (to most of the participants) magic, but in de Camp's own urbane and quietly erudite voice. Those already familiar with his own fantasy and science fiction writing will not be surprised to see his characteristic virtues at work in a different genre.

This, my favorite, concerns a journey from the heart of the Persian Empire to the sources of the Nile, in pursuit of an imaginary beast. A giant Persian nobleman, in serious trouble as a result of innocent involvement in a (real) court scandal, is sent off on a quest with his Greek tutor as advisor. They take turns playing Sancho to the other's Don Quixote, as their personal traits prove helpful or dangerous in changing circumstance. Along the way they acquire and lose companions, stumble into and out of trouble, and provide the reader a tour of the ancient world from western Asia to central Africa.

The suggestions for the story came from the presence of a now-rare African animal on a Persian royal monument and an archaeologist's speculation on a possible priestly fraud in ancient Babylon. (The latter reflects the story of "Bel and the Dragon" in the Greek version of the Book of Daniel, found in the apocrypha of Protestant Bibles, and appended to Daniel in Catholic editions). Those interested in this background should seek out "Lands Beyond," by L. Sprague de Camp and Willy Ley (originally 1951). (It should be pointed out that the word "sirrush" in both books is now generally read as "mushhush"). Some of the Asian material is also covered in de Camp's "Great Cities of the Ancient World" (originally 1972).

The African scenes are based on a combination of de Camp's travels and the best information available when he was writing. Those readers familiar with early European accounts will not need de Camp's acknowledgment of sources to spot the origin of several scenes. Those who are familiar with current studies of ancient Africa should bear in mind that no author, no matter how careful, can be expected to be in advance of the state of knowledge. (The solution to the "what is the most dangerous beast in Africa?" will now be apparent to far more readers than when the expedition's pygmy guide tried to answer it.) De Camp returned to Africa in his 1969 historical novel "The Golden Wind," set in Hellenistic times, this time from the point of view of a Greek sea captain seeking a water route to India.

The Donning edition added illustrations to a book originally published by Doubleday in 1961, and reprinted by Lancer in 1968. The Lancer edition had a glorious but uncredited cover, which was apparently the work of Roy G. Krenkel, perhaps still best known for his covers for the early Ace edition of Tarzan, and the illustrator of "Great Cities".

An erudite/literate adventure tale: no longer an oxymoron!

When Xerxes, the Persian King of Kings, fearing the onset of decrepitude and old age, turns to his personal alchemist and sorcerer Ostanas, for a magical solution, the game (as Holmes used to say) is afoot. Reprieved from an untimely death (decreed for his unknowing complicity in the rape of a young noble woman), Bessas of Zariaspa (a big hulking, mother-loving, heroic lug, formerly of the King's own troops) is saved at the eleventh hour from an untimely seat on the royal stake and charged with two tasks: bring back to Xerxes the ear of a king; and find and capture a live dragon (said to dwell at the headwaters of the Nile, deep in unknown Africa). His companion on this mission is to be his former Greek tutor, Myron of Miletos, who just happens to also be the man who brought Bessas to the attention of the King, in time to save the big warrior's life.

What neither of these adventurers knows, however, is that the King's sorcerer needs a third item as well: the heart of a hero, which presumably will be readily available -- once Bessas returns from his labors with the two items he has been sent to retrieve. Myron, a simple scholar with philosophical pretensions, sees their excursion as an opportunity to explore the world and create some grand theory out of the knowledge he garners, to make a name for himself among the Greek philosophers back home. Bessas, on the other hand, has other concerns since Xerxes has placed his mother in protective custody -- as a guarantor of the hero's ultimate return.

These two set out on a fascinating journey which takes them through many of the lands of the old Persian Empire. In the process, they pick up a tubby local boy whose chief claim to fame seems to be his voracious sexual appetite, a Syrian mystic of dubious talents and loyalties, and a Judean of Philistine ancestry with the skills of a metal smith. Fleeing numerous attacks on their persons by the minions of the raped girl's family (who begrudge the King's decision to free Bessas), this motley company finds its way to Egypt. There they become involved in a little grave robbing, before heading farther south to the barbarous country of Kush, where the local ruler adds a further task to their assignments as a fee for letting them pass deeper into the African interior.

Having linked up with a bandit Arab clan, headed by an old shaykh and his clever and beautiful daughter, the whole gang proceeds south along the Nile into "pestilential plains," the abode of unfamiliar and savage peoples. How the tale ends up is worth the read, as is the fascinating protrayal of this time and its inhabitants. Suffice it to say they have a number of rather close encounters, not least of which with a kingdom of local cannibals, and generally squeak by -- though not without a good deal of bloodshed and mayhem.

The tale is not the usual sword and sorcery fare (though its author was known for writing that stuff) since, while there is a great deal of talk about wizards and magic, there is no attempt to portray these as anything more than the grossest of superstitions. The heroes are also men of their time and do not scruple to kill an enemy in cold blood. In fact, this book is almost hardheaded in its realistic approach to human conflict. The dialogue's rather cleverly done, too.

Unfortunately, the tale was penned back in 1961 (although I read the Donning book, issued in 1982) and so it's not attentive to some of the politically correct niceties of our own era. Blacks are generally presented as savages and unattractive (which may actually have been how characters like our travellers would have seen them -- especially in the context of the encounters described -- but this will certainly offend some readers who are more attuned to contemporary sensitivities). Similarly, the Judean Shimri (really a Philistine and an idolator) is described as having a receding chin, spitting when he talks, stammering and as being generally annoying -- all for no very obvious reason. Perhaps de Camp based the character on someone he knew, but it does seem a trifle gratuitous. I suspect some would find him an offensively stereotypical character, as well.

Finally, the female characters have no individual vitality at all. The Arab princess is supposed to be the real leader of her band but at critical times she recedes unaccountably into the background. The other two females who join the expedition in Africa are slaves and get used as such. Probably not unrealistic, but again not attuned to our present, more enlightened age. And their main role (even that of the bold princess) seems to be to fawn over our hero, Bessas.

While the female characters have little life in them, the males, who are somewhat more interesting, are not more deeply drawn. Myron and Bessas do come to life, as does the sterotypical Syrian wizard, but none of them seems to have a substantial inner life. But this is a plot driven by events -- not motivation -- and, as such, it does its work. If you can bear with the extremely poor editing (typos on nearly every other page) and the mid-twentieth century sensibility, this is a book well worth the read -- both for its vivid and historically convincing depiction of the ancient world during the height of the Persian Empire (just before Alexander the Great Hellenized things) and for its fast-paced adventure in exotic lands.

Very happy I never have to look at this torture device ever again in my life.

This book made my life a living hell for 10 weeks. The format is very confusing with the authors showing you the wrong way to go about learning a concept AND THEN telling you the the correct way. Chemistry is hard enough, and this book just makes it worse! It also didn't help that my professor relied on it to teach about 75% of the material. Ugh, hardest "A" I ever earned!

Oh, and the first copy Amazon sent me had the right cover but the inside was a Russian workbook! WTF? How does that happen?!?! Luckily they overnighted a replacement no questions asked.

A horrible approach to teaching

A horrible approach to teaching. Guided inquiry method would work if you have someone who is knows the subject well enough to guide you; otherwise it is more like lost child wandering about in a huge, dark forest hoping to find a bug to eat because they are starving and cold. Unfortunately, the instructors are told not to help and to allow the students to figure it out on their own...The .05% this method might work for probably know the subject backwards and forwards by the time they figure it all out. The rest are just out of luck.

wrong approach to chem

The way they present this is the wrong way to teach chemistry. I get what they're trying to do--get you to think critically about a topic before explaining it to you, but in the end a lot of it just ended up being confusing. Especially since I did this book as a 7 week class, there was no time to sit and learn all the wrong ways, jut teach me the right way and then ask me critical thinking questions about it. This book needs serious revision. Luckily, I had other resources to learn my Chem and I still pulled an A in the class.

About the Author
Paul Stoller is a professor of anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.�He is the author of many books, including ethnographies, biographies, and memoirs. In 1994 he was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2002, the American Anthropological Association named him the recipient of the Robert B. Textor Award for Excellence in Anthropology. He lectures frequently both in the United States and Europe and has appeared on various NPR programs as well as on the National Geographic Television Network.

Great ethnography

This is one of the most interesting ethnographic texts I've read. Stoller presents the material clearly, with intent, action, and solid, grounded explanations. He created a story explaining their culture, beliefs, customs, and stepped out as much as he could to make the focus on the experience of the Songhay, rather than on himself.

Great for Specialists!

The skinny: Buy if you're an ethnographer, anthropologist, or if you are visiting Niger. Otherwise, skip.

This ethnography is an academic upgrade to Stoller and Olke's In Sorcery's Shadow, which was their well-received memoir of Stoller's 10-year apprenticeship to a Songhay (Niger) sorcerers. Unlike the previous work of personal experience with more solitary sorcerers, Fusion of the Worlds attempts to show one spirit possession troupe's ability to operate in many different Songhay "worlds." That is, Stoller wants to show his readers how possession troupes often facilitate a variety of practices. These include the relationship between the individual and the group, remembering the past, engaging in political dialogue, relating Songhay religious practices with Islamic ones, and even negotiating rainfall. Possession troupes, like his from Tillaberi, Niger, are much, much more than performers--they are creating, maintaining, reflecting, identifying, mocking, celebrating, critiquing, and changing the Songhay world. Stoller claims they are fusing the world of the possession troupe and its performances with the rest of Songhay life. It is a mutually beneficial relationship, one which is actively and continually constructed by the troupe and its audience.

Stoller uses large sections of quotation, either from tape-recorder transcriptions or field notes, and he argues that this is really the best way to understand the Songhay. This may be true, but it makes appreciating Stoller's thesis much more difficult. The long sections of stories can be enjoyable, but it can also be laborious for those of us who many read this book without a desire to learn the intimate details of Songhay life. It delays academic discussions to privilege the many stories that help show the troupe's activities. This is fair in one sense, but it fails to provide a strong narrative thread for readers to follow. When Stoller has theoretical contributions, they are often short or delayed until the Epilogue. While some readers may be thankful for this, it was a more serious problem for me.

For instance, there are many useful implications of Stoller's suggestion that Songhay possession theater is much more than the framework for theatrical presentation of cultural history. However, when he argues that we should look to the "inner space" that is cultivated by these performances, readers should instantly recognize the cultural dilemma inherent in any interpretation he offers. Even as an initiate, the troupe's performances were never directed at him, and therefore the only access to the inner life of the Songhay is through language. Stoller musk ask, and his participants must answer him. Thus, the entire work is one of translation where Stoller does his best to make sure that his translation is recognizable to BOTH the Songhay (for accuracy) and his English-reading audience (for intelligibility). When he claims that more is going on inside, we should be aware that his translation has now moved into interpretation and theorizing. This isn't a bad thing--after all it is most scholars' goal to say something meaniningful--but it may mean that the very idea that possession might act as a "microcosm of Songhay culture" is closer to what an observer (and not a participant) would say.

Is this nitpicking? No. The integration of interpretation and transcriptions has been achieved with better results by others authors. If reading about poession is your thing, I encourage you to reader Stoller. However, if you want a BETTER book about possession, I encourage you to read Mama Lola instead.

Possesion beyond watching the exorcist

Stoller does an excellent job explaining the various types of possesion ceremonies among the Songhay culture. It's fascinating to picture how the spirits of the outside world can enter a mediums body to basically communicate with the people of Songhay regarding good and bad things occuring within the community. These people turn to the spirit world turn recieve help with settling disputes, having a good harvest in the future, venting their hate for colonialism,etc. But, not only does Stoller do a good job of explaining these various types of spirits, but he also does a wonderful job of interpreting many fascinating ceremonies that he attended. You feel like your actually there, witnessing a spirit taking over a medium's body. I am currently a student of Stoller's, and it was our assignment to read this book. I liked it very much I am continuing my reasearch of spirit-possesion in the future to learn all I can about a subject that's so intriguing. Stoller's book is awesome!

About the Author
Madan Mehta, B.Arch., M.Bdg.Sc., Ph.D., P.E., is a faculty member at the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Arlington, and teaches courses in construction and structures. He was previously the Director of the Architectural Engineering Program at King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia. A licensed professional engineer (Texas), Fellow of the Institute of Architects (India), and Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, he has worked in India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. With academic credentials in both architecture and engineering, he ran a comprehensive architecture/engineering practice while working as a faculty member at the Delhi School of Architecture, and he worked for a large general contractor in the United States during a leave of absence. He is the author of several full-length books and monographs on building construction, architectural structures, and architectural engineering.

Diane Armpriest, M.L.A., M. Arch., is Associate Professor and Chair, Faculty of Architecture and Interior Design, College of Art and Architecture, University of Idaho. Before joining the faculty in 2001, she worked as an architectural project manager, and as a project developer and construction manager for neighborhood nonprofit housing providers. Her teaching and research interests include the pedagogy of architectural building construction technology, the expression of structure and materials in Northwest regional architecture, and the relationship between building and site. Previously, she was Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Highlights of her work there include research in resource-efficient design and construction and working with students on design-build projects.

Great book on materials

So far I love this book. I am currently taking a heavy construction methods class. This book is also being used for light construction(residential) class at my institution as well.

I am about half way through the course so I have not read the whole book. But so far, it's an easy read with lots of info. I love the side bars.They contain additional information about subject being discussed in that particular section. The questions at the end of each chapter are some what challenging. They are in sequential order so you don't have to look all over the chapter to find the answers. I have had books that quiz you on info that even isn't in the material being covered in that particular chapter. Some may think I am being silly but I believe one should be challenged to learn the material not be tested on how effectively you can comb through hundreds of pages. There is a ton of info in this text.

I also like the fact that it discusses sustainable construction in every chapter. In each section it explains how the material being discussed in the chapter pertains to sustainable practices. Being a LEED AP(US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), I believe it is extremely important that today's construction professionals embrace and fully understand sustainability as it pertains to construction. So called "green building" is quickly becoming a standard practice in the US and throughout the developed world.

This is a great text book. I definitely plan on keeping it for reference material as I continue my career.I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning the basics about construction materials and methods.

Excellent textbook...frustrating for Kindle

As a student studying Construction Management, I found this to be a terrific textbook. The diagrams and picture explanations I found to be very helpful, and there is a plethora of helpful information.

My one complaint has nothing to do with the content of the book however. My biggest frustration with this textbook had to do with the kindle experience. First of all, this did work fine on my Kindle HD, albeit with a small screen, it was difficult to pan around a large textbook page. My options for viewing it on a computer were limited because it cannot be viewed on the kindle cloud reader for viewing on web browser and it is not available for viewing on kindle for windows 8. So if you have a new laptop or computer and want to view the content on a bigger screen than a kindle you are out of luck. That needs to change. Please allow me to read this on a windows 8 device.

Does a pretty good job at keeping up with the new book that came out. I'm in a class that uses the newest version of this book and with a few new illustrations and color images, there isn't much difference.
