Misled and lied to.

Book was listed as new.

Received book very used and missing software. New books come with appropriate software. It was a scam. I need book now or I would return it.

I will never use this source again for school texts and advise all my student friends not to use it. I also work at the Veterans center at school, and will advise my fellow Veterans not to use as it is a ripoff and a scam.

I was deceived and lied to.

Hearing: Its Physiology and Pathophysiology provides detailed information for individuals with diverse educational backgrounds. For the basic scientist, it provides an understanding of the auditory system and how it works. For the clinician, it provides insight into the normal as well as the diseased auditory system. It also provides essential information for those who design and implement technological developments that help the hearing-impaired.
The anatomy and physiology of the ear and the auditory nervous system are clearly presented so that they may be understood with minimal knowledge of the physics of sound (acoustics). Hearing describes the pathophysiology of disorders that affect the middle ear, the cochlea, the auditory nerve, and higher auditory nervous structures, including less common disorders such as acoustic tumors, bilirubinemia, and cortical lesions. Tinnitus is discussed in a separate chapter.
Clinicians, clinical researchers, and basic scientists will turn to Hearing: Its Physiology and Pathophysiology for a thorough understanding of the anatomy and function of the normal and the diseased auditory system.

About the Author
Dr. M�ller is currently the M.F. Jonsson Professor of Hearing, University of Texas at Dallas, the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. He was on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for 19 years, where he held positions as Research Professor of Otolaryngology and later of Neurological Surgery. From 1988 to 1997 he held the position of Professor of Neurological Surgery. He received his medical education at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he also held faculty positions for more than 10 years. Dr. M�ller is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Hearing Research.

About the Author
Christie Nordhielm is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Michigan Business School. Nordhielm is a recognized marketing consultant and trainer, and has worked for a variety of multinational organizations. She has recently worked with American Express, W.J. Wrigley, Sprint, and Jim Beam Brands Worldwide. She has also consulted for a variety of domestic and mid-sized companies. In addition to her consulting work, Nordhielm lectures extensively both domestically and abroad. Nordhielm�s expertise on a variety of marketing issues is often sought by publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Advertising Age, Business Week and other print and television media outlets. In addition to her publications in academic journals, Nordhielm has published in the Harvard Business Review. Professor Nordhielm�s work is also presented in her forthcoming book, Marketing Management: The Big Picture, to be published by Thomson/Southwestern in October, 2004. Nordhielm has received numerous teaching awards and recognition as an educator. In 2003, the Northwestern University�s Kellogg School of Management student body recognized her with the highest honor given to a Professor for teaching excellence, the Lavengood Outstanding Professor of the Year award. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Michigan, Nordhielm was an Assistant Professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She was also a Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, where she earned her PhD in Marketing and Behavioral Science in 1998.

Big Picture - Big Impact

After 25 years in the marketing profession as both a practioner and educator, I have completely changed my view of how marketing is done because of the Big Picture. The Big Picture framework will challenge the traditional Kotler school of marketing management and become the dominant approach to marketing. We use it now as our standard framework across all of our various marketing teams.

What makes the Big Picture so appealing? The framework makes you determine strategy much earlier in the marketing planning process than traditional approaches. It links strategy better to core competencies, and it links strategy better to the tactical four P's of marketing than traditional approaches.

On the surface, the Big Picture looks like other marketing management processes that you find in any marketing text. It has the familiar concepts: segmentation, targeting, and positiong; the 4P's, branding, customer lifetime value...it's all there. It's not until you dig deeply into the book that you begin to appreciate the richness of how things are put together. You begin to realize that "something is different here" as you begin using the framework and seeing marketing opportunities in a new light. I have used the Big Picture model in working with the most experienced, "blue chip" marketers as well as brand new marketers. The framework creates a common language between marketers and helps get alignment quicker on where to make marketing investments. Even our engineers want to learn the Big Picture to help them create new products more effectively.

Once you've used the Big Picture, it's hard to go back to traditional approaches. I recommend it to business schools and corporate marketing departments as a way to unify teams and strengthen the marketing mindset.

A book for people with a marketing problem to solve...

Nordhielm has captured a real world solution to the elusive marketing 'problem' - written in a direct and easy to read style, she has created a systematic and effective approach to helping the reader understand and navigate the often misunderstood science of marketing. This was a pleasure to read and in the end it is making a significant difference in my business. At the risk of giving away the ending - she does get the big picture. I highly recommend this book.

Browner aims to document the contemporary intertribal pow-wow for future generations of Native peoples and to "offer non-Indian readers an entry point into a richly textured realm of music and dance." A Native American ethnomusicologist who teaches American Indian studies at UCLA, Browner is both participant and observer. As a dancer herself, she had immediate access to the community of pow-wow participants, and as a scholar she brings a historical and critical analysis to a politically sensitive subject. The introduction includes a summary and critique of 19th- and 20th-century pow-wow research, describing both its value and flaws. Descriptions of the diverse dance styles, regalia, songs, singing styles, and the structure of pow-wow events are covered in chapters separate from interviews. Browner limits her treatment of the subject to pow-wows of the Lakota and Anishnaabeg peoples, and, within this limit, this is an accessible work for both Native and non-Native, nonspecialist audiences. This is a wonderful book for those interested in the modern Pow-wow

This is a wonderful book for those interested in the modern Pow-wow. It includes a history and review of all the contest dances. Being an ethnomusicologist Tara Browner concentrates on the music. She spends some time on the Jingle Dress, but was surprised she didn't know more of its history starting with the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic and more of the traditional rules for the dance. I especially liked the interviews with dancers, singers, and participants. I highly recommend this book for both the non-Indian spectator, as well as the seasoned pow-wower.

Important but a bit Tendentious; 4.5 stars

This is another important and interesting book from Stanley Payne, author of the excellent The Franco Regime and other fine books on Spanish and European history. The Collapse... is a detailed analysis of the events leading up to the end of the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Civil War. Payne presents a detailed chronological narrative of the political history of the final years of the Republic accompanied by some structural analysis, notably in a good summary chapter at the end of the book. In Payne's view, the fall of the Republic resulted from a combination of weak political institutions and particularly the rash and anti-democratic actions of the Spanish Left. The latter including not only definitely Left wing parties like the anarcho-syndicalists and Socialists but also middle class left of center Liberal parties. In Payne's analysis, the Civil War was precipitated by the Left's disregard of democratic principles, flouting of the law, and pursuit of radical policies that would eventually push the Right into revolt. Payne is harshly critical of the major leaders of the Left, particularly the Liberal leaders Azana and the Socialist leaders Largo Caballero and Prieto. The President of the Republic, Alcala Zamora, also comes in for considerable criticism for actions that degraded the democratic nature of the parliamentary process. As an indictment of the actions of the Spanish Left, this book is very effective.

I think, however, that Payne's analysis is somewhat incomplete. As he himself points out, the weak political institutions of the Republic stemmed in good part from the destruction of the prior parliamentary system by the immediately preceding military dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. While Payne is appropriately critical of the leadership of the Left, I think he lets the Right leadership off too lightly. There was continuous military plotting against the Republic throughout its lifespan. At least one Rightist group, the Carlists, actually engaged in treasonous dealings with the Italian Fascist government. Payne's point that much of this intrigue was not very threatening is probably correct but since the Republic emerged from a military dictatorship, it was certain to be perceived as very threatening by the Left. Payne points to the anti-clerical behavior of the Left as particularly destructive. There is no doubt he is correct but nowhere does he mention that the Catholic hierarchy oppposed not only clearly wrong actions of the Left like suppression of the Jesuits but also more democratic actions like the separation of church and state. The major Right party, the CEDA, under the leadership of Gil Robles, was more law abiding than several of the Leftist groups, but Gil Robles never unequivocally committed to democratic principles and flirted with fascist style rhetoric. As Payne points out, both the major party of the Left, the Socialists, and the major party of the Right, the CEDA, were at best "semi-loyal" to the Republic. Finally, Payne hardly mentions some important aspects of the international background of the Republic. By the mid-30s, the Leftist parties would have seen many of their cognate parties in central and eastern Europe crushed by Rightist movements. The most important Socialist party in Europe, and one committed to democratic practices, the German Socialists, had been destroyed by the Nazi 'back door' revolution based on abuse on a parliamentary/electoral system. It wasn't unreasonable for the Spanish Socialists to fear something similar in Spain. None of these facts exculpate the Spanish Left but they do make their actions easier to understand.

Chapeau!

Stanley Payne is one of the hispanists who knows what he speaks about. Many others, even Spaniards, select the facts conveying to a previous conclusion. Payne is not like that.

In a recent interview, he said that "spanish war was not a war of good peeople against bad people; it was a war of bad people against bad people". I fully agree.

When someone, like the present Government, tries to re-write the history defeating Franco thirty years after he was dead, there is a danger: Many ghosts (from both sides) can come out and, once they are out, nobody could know how to get rid of them.

Excellent research, but biased work

Many people will agree that the Spanish Civil War was one of the most contentious and bitter conflicts of the twentieth century. To learn more about this conflict it is important to learn about the Spanish Second Republic, 1931-1936 and its demise. Stanley Payne is one of the few historians with an excellent track record on documenting the Spanish Civil War (Hugh Thomas, Paul Preston and Gabriel Jackson being the others). However, Mr. Payne stumbles or, perhaps more accurately commits the sin of allowing bias to come into his research.

The research is high quality, although I would have liked to have seen more government data. Mr. Payne relies almost exclusively on personal memoirs and the citations of other authors. As I read the book I felt almost as if he were trying to justify the revolt led by Francisco Franco. Frequently comparing the Spanish Second Republic to Hitler and the Nazis, Payne essentially blames it for allowing all the violence that led up to the Spanish Civil War. He blames the Socialists for violence.

Manuel Aza�a, the prime minister in 1931 and who played a significant role in the affairs of the Republic, is portrayed as an arrogant and uncompromising egotist and the president, Niceto Alcal� Zamora is depicted as a manipulator who frequently suppressed the constitutionality of the government and restricted the Cortes from doing its job.

Payne blames the Socialists and the Left Republicans for fostering and condoning violent campaigns against the right. At times he contradicts himself: he claims that the left invented the fascist threat--that there was no fascist organization in Spain, but then later he elaborates on the role of the Falange and its victimization at the hands of the leftists. At one point he writes: "The Spanish Left insisted on a permanentely leftist regime that could ignore the rules of the game but guarantee predictable results, not a functioning democracy."

Mr. Payne is at the top of his game with his research. I learned quite a bit about some of the political parties that took part in the Republic. However, he should have included a table at the beginning to serve as a reference for all the parties and their acronyms. I frequently had to look back through the book to see what the acronyms stood for. A reference table would have been very helpful.

The underlying theme of the book seems to be that the right (especially the CEDA) tried as hard as it could to work with the Republic but frequently found itself to be under violent attack. Another theme that Payne emphasizes is the attacks on churches and the clergy. Once again we see that only the left was violent. I would have liked Payne to have elaborated more on the relationship between the Church and the monarchists, since they did form an important part of the nationalists. Unfortunately, he only mentions that Renovaci�n Espa�ola (the monarchist party) went to Italy to ask for support from Mussolini.

Towards the end of the book he portrays Franco as someone not willing to revolt (until the assassination of Calvo Sotelo)and as a firm supporter of the Republic. Payne also claims that Emilio Mola, the architect behind the revolt, made a last ditch effort to avoid the conflict. The evidence that Payne presents to support this is not very strong and is open to any type of interpretation.

It would have been much better if Payne had presented a more balanced view of the Second Republic and the elements that contributed to its downfall. Historians must be very careful not to cross a certain line when they present research and I think Payne comes dangerously close to doing so. And it would be a shame to label this book 'anti-left propaganda.' But at times it seems as if Payne is intending to debunk the notion that the Second Republic failed because of strong rightist opposition. It encountered vehement resistance from the Church and the monarchists since its very inception. In his conclusion, for no apparent reason, Payne draws a comparison between the Spanish Second Republic and the Salvador Allende government of 1970-1973. There was no need for this other than to also debunk that other stalward of leftist mythology. It made no sense whatsover for the Allende government to even be mentioned in this book. This was not a good way to conclude his work and I am disappointed that Payne made this decision.

I think that for anyone not familiar with the Spanish Civil War, this will be a difficult read. At times it became pedantic. But for anyone who enjoys reading about Spanish history or about the Spanish Civil War, this is worth reading. However, the reader should also read Hugh Thomas's "The Spanish Civil War" to temper it.

Two particular features of the legal and cultural regulation of marriage and marital rights are focused on - the perceived requirement for kafa’a or equality in marriage between so called high and low socio-economic status peoples is examined, and the institution of talaq, which grants greater rights to men than to women in appeals for divorce. This book addresses highly complex subjects with great rigor, in terms of empirical research and engagement with theory, sociological and political as well as theological and legal. It is an interesting investigation of the divisions of authority between the state, Islam and tribal norms, highlighting barriers to reform in both Oman and wider Islamic society, and advocating the removal of such obstacles.

The only chess book to buy for kids and adults alike.

Unfortunately this book is out of print, but it is by far the best book which helped get my son interested. The drawings are delightful and full of expression. For example, (and I'm paraphrasing) "The pawns are foot soldiers, marching up one by one, and can stubbornly block others from advancing".

In short, the analogy to soldiers in war is what my son likes so much about the book. He gets to attack me and strategize about it. He is given freedom among a few rules (you can move whereever you want but only diagonally, in the case of the bishop). I was amazed at how fast he was strategizing several moves ahead. The final pages are full of advanced terms and all are explained well, with pictures to help explain the moves and practice "games".

I wish the UK would reprint this book, in hardcover. The paperback we got (only thing left) will not last long.

Just Great!

I learned how to play chess at the age of 11 with these books and I UNDERSTOOD chess immediatelly. Now, many many years later, I am byuing these again and I am eager to teach my growing daughter how to play ... she is only 2 now, but I noticed that the nice illustrations have already captivated her!!! She knows the pieces already and we are moving on to how they move :-)

Great Book for Nursing Class

Curren's Math for Meds: Dosages and Solutions, 11th Edition I purchased this book used. It was in really good condition and cost a fraction of the price in the school book store. My daughter is in college for Registered Nursing and this book is a great help in learning to calculate medication dosages. Being a nurse myself I live that it has full colored photos and lots of practice problems.

This book was recommended for my Pharmacology class but i have only used the book twice. I am very good when it comes to math so i didn't need the book, but i will say that it is very detailed with the steps required to do dosage calculations.
If you are a math whiz then then it is an unnecessary buy but if you struggle with math then it is recommended that you buy this book.

Awesome review for an RN returning to the workforce. It covers all the meds calculations that a nurse could possibly come across, from neonatal to geriatric, from oncology to ICU. I can also see where a nursing student would benefit. Haven't used the online portion simply because the text is so comprehensive.

About the Author
Dr. Frederic (“Ric”) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. He is the lead author of nine undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy.� Dr. Martini is currently affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has a long-standing bond with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini is now a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2005-2007. Dr. Martini was a member of the HAPS committee that established the course curriculum guides for A&P.

Dr. Judi L. Nath is a biology professor at Lourdes College, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.� She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. Dr. Nath is devoted to her students and strives to convey the intricacies of science in a captivating way that students find meaningful, interactive, and exciting.�She is a multiple recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award, granted by the college to recognize her effective teaching, scholarship, and community service. She is active in many professional organizations, notably the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has served several terms on the board of directors.�

Ed Bartholomew�received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and his M.S. from the University of Hawaii. He has taught A&P at both the secondary and undergraduate levels at Lahainaluna High School and at Maui Community College.

Bill Ober is the lead illustrator on all Martini titles. Bill is an Affiliate Professor of Biology at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, VA) and is part of the Core Faculty at Shoals Marine Laboratory (Portsmouth, NH), where he teaches Biological Illustration most summers.

Claire E. Ober is an illustrator who works closely with Bill Ober.

Great product!

I was skeptical at first because I've read so many poor reviews about books not coming with access codes I planned on only getting the text book but I didn't however realize how much I would actually be getting for such a small price. :) I just got the book into today so haven't truly read it but I did look through everything and was extremely impressed.

I got the Anatomy & Physiology text, student access code, plus the atlas for human anatomy(includes real pictures of the human anatomy) and a really cool anatomy tutorial CD. All for $48.73. The book alone is $116 USED at my university and does not include an access code. The text is an excellent read, and the pictures of the Atlas book are beautifully done. I love how it includes pictures from real human anatomy.

This one is perfect for me

Exactly what I was looking for, new and shrink wrapped. I am a yoga instructor looking for an approachable text on A&P. I had read Kaminoff & Mathews' Yoga Anatomy and Coutler's Anatomy of Hatha Yoga and was ready for a more in-depth treatment. This one is perfect for me. The text reads like a novel and is easy to follow and understand. I'm doing this as home study and have found that the supplemental "Mastering A&P" is worth many times its price for the eText alone. But the real payoff for me is the PAL 3 virtual cadaver. When you double click on a muscle, for example, a CGI view of the skeleton with that muscle appears and demonstrates where it attaches and inserts, then how it moves the skeleton at the joints. To make best use of this feature, you'll already need to know the names of most of the bones of the body ("medial cuneiform").
