Ufology 201 - A survey course of the extraterrestrial scene

An up-to-date overview of the literature with carefully and responsibly chosen sources. Secret in the sense that you won't these kinds of views (or almost any kind of ufology views) represented in the mass media. Not as enigmatic as Keel, or as deep as Marrs, but definitely a required read for a newbie who wants to get their feet wet in a hurry. Engaging and easy to read. His analyses help make sense of the complex terrain, motivations, personalities, background and diversity of the UFO scene. If you have been following the the ET scene closely for the last ten years you might not learn much, but if you haven't you will probably go to bed each night with your head swimming in disbelief at what you read. This is not to say that this work is overly controversial, just that the media blackout on this type of information is very effective. The author chooses key players and interviews them to bring himself up to speed. Then he uses that background to investigate and chart a meaningful course for the reader. He does not present himself as a field investigator or an expert, but as an intelligent interpreter. If an author cannot find accurate ufology information, it is because your tax dollars have been spent to disinform and hide, not because the author did not look for the answers. Lets you know, for example, that many so-called skeptics like Sagan, were actually doing contract work with government ET data that unequivocally demonstrated the opposite reality. Recommended, includes an 11 page chapter bibliography and index.

more unscientific nonsense and rehashings

Although this book is well written and nicely illustrated and designed, it is just another in a line of UFO books that treat fantasy as reality and take great liberties with science and logic.

This author draws upon the theories and stories of such authors as George Adamski, David Icke, Zecharia Sitchin, "Branton," and pre-Nazi occult groups (to name just a few) who have not passed the test of believability after many years of scrutiny. I have no problem with anyone proposing "theories" about aliens influencing the human race in the past or present. BUT, these authors must be held to the same standards of criticism that any scientific author is--namely, one's theory must have facts, or reasonable interpretations to back them up. And most of the authors that Kasten draws upon have never been able to back up their theories with facts or reasonable interpretations. (I am not referring here to the UFO researchers who have examined evidence and interviewed witnesses for specific UFO incidents. Rather, I am referring to those authors, such as Robert Bauval and others, who have offered "theories" to demonstrate the connection between aliens and humanity--a worthwhile endeavor, as long as it is done in a "believable" manner).

I am always annnoyed with UFO writers who accept the existence of aliens coming from star systems such as Sirius (spectrum A1, V), Aldebaran (K5, III), Alpha Draconis (A0, III), Betelgeuse (M2, I), Rigel (B8, I), and the Pleiades (about 400 LY away and only about .1 billion years old), even though serious astronomers consider these star systems and star clusters as very poor (improbable, actually) candidates for having planets and advanced life forms present in them. At one point, Kasten refers to Alpha Draconis as a "constellation," rather than as a star (p. 219), which demonstrates a poor understanding of astronomy. I have seen similar blunders on many Internet sites devoted to UFO's and aliens.

Kasten also makes statements (or accepts the statements of others) that show a lack of familiarity with geography. In discussing the Roswell crash and other New Mexican crashes, he sometimes offers distances that are very inaccurate, by a good 50-100 miles. Maybe some people would find this unimportant, but it shows me that Kasten never took the trouble to look at a map when examining those New Mexican crashes. For example, the cameraman who attended and reported on the May 31, 1947 crash stated that the crash site was about 8 miles SW of Socorro, whereas Kasten states that this crash occured "somewhere southwest of Socorro in the Plains of San Agustin, possibly as far west as Elk Mountain." (p. 71). If you look at a map of New Mexico, you can see that Elk Mountain is about 75 miles from Socorro, and that the Plains of San Agustin are at least 30 miles west of Socorro.

In general, this book contains nothing ORIGINAL. The author simply presents ideas and theories from other authors, without challenging the weaknesses or errors found in those other sources. Thus, this book is just another rehashing of other people's material, and I have already read most of the original books from which he has drawn material. To me, that does not make for a good UFO book!

P.S. the supposed photo on page 83 entitled "Astronaut Habitat on Serpo?" was explained to me as a hoax by the person who made it, using PhotoShop. He was actually surprised that I believed it was real! The building in this photo is the exterior (back) of the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. You can find pictures of this church online.

"Probably" a useless book

The first few chapters are a hefty dose of the usual Roswell information, but I had to stop reading after page 71. The author discusses an alleged crash at San Augustine and says 'This crash was probably the one that caused the death of the alien depicted in the now-famous Ray Santilli alien autopsy film.'
First of all, "probably?" Nothing in this world could ever be considered evidence to link that hoaxed video to some fabled crash, but let's just go ahead and pretend it's the same one for a second. However, that Santilli Autopsy film is the most known hoaxed video in UFO history. Santilli himself has gone into great detail about how and why he made the film. The fact that this author did not know that and then printed in his book that it was the alien from some crash he heard about, almost discredits this entire phenomenon. I'm shocked none of the other reviewers noticed this. Shows how many 'real' researchers are actually taking UFOs seriously. The book also has a ton of typos such as 'ears' instead of years.

At one point in the book the author starts ranting about Criss Angel and how his powers are real.

But not once does the author mention underground bases or aliens, Dulce, or even Los Alamos. Instead he wastes breath talking about the 'glass cities on Mars'.

Useless book.

Great for Domestic Abuse Survivors

This book was a tough read in that it forced you to be introspective and face the truth about your past and present relationship choices. This book helps you regain confidence in your intuition and empowers you to face current negative relationships and gives you strategies you can employ to avoid future dangerous relationships. I loved this book and will buy the workbook to further start my journey of healing and strength.

Not just for women

This book should be required reading for understanding how psychological deviants and individuals who are broken and injured by a society that is at many times completely insensitive to human development and care can have a completely negative affect on an individual in a relationships.

(Don't be mislead; "danger" can be AMAZINGLY subtle and appears in many forms.) About the Author
Karis is a Pacific Northwest native with a BA in English from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a few years of postgraduate work in Classics at UW in Seattle. Naturally, this education led to a career as a horseback riding instructor. She has been teaching for over twenty years and has been published in a national equestrian magazine. She lives on a small farm in Washington with a black cat, goats, and a foster horse from a local equine rescue group. She spends most of her free time reading, playing the violin and viola, and riding with friends.

Worth the Read

This story has one of the popular themes for a lesbian romance in that you have one character who has a wounded psyche from her past, and the woman who will save her. In other words, the type of story that I always seem to like despite the fact the theme has been told many times.

Jamie is your seemingly overbearing and commanding businesswoman who is the "Love um and Leave um" type. Her modus operanti is to pick beautiful and willing women up for a few hours of sex. She won't allow herself to fall in love because of the guilt she carries in believing she is responsible for the tragic incident that happened to her young niece. She is the caretaker for the niece and gets her anything money can buy, but can't give her love. Then there is baggage from actions that transpired when she was a teen.

The other main character is Kate, a beautiful equestrian with dreams of competing in show events on a top-flight show horse she wishes to purchase with funding from Jaime's company. Kate has her own baggage in that she was groomed by her parents to be a social climber, and does this very well, fitting in with those that have wealth and prestige. Kate also has a caring and genuinely nice side.

These two do not hit it off, but are attracted to each other. I liled that these two were not between the sheets together until their feelings started to grow. They were still in denial, but the attraction eventually leads to more, but things are not smooth.

Both main characters are depicted very well and came across as authentic. The writing was good and the story flowed. A great book to spend the weekend reading.

Lovely well written romance

Jamie Callahan is a high flying Investment Analyst. She keeps any relationship at arms length. She will never let her heart become involved with anyone. Her niece Anna has everything money can buy, but she has neither love or Jamie's precious time. Any romantic liaison Jamie has is short lived. Love them and leave them is Jamie's attitude.

Kate Brown has grown up pleasing her parents. She puts on many different faces to meet all occasions. Kate's parents are pushing her up the social ladder, maybe beyond what Kate actually wants for herself.

Jamie and Kate meet when Kate applies to Jamie's investment company for funding to buy a superior horse to enter an Olympic event. Jamie finds herself fascinated and attracted to Kate. Which she must ignore at all costs. She has to protect her heart. The more time Jamie and Kate spend together the more difficult it becomes for Jamie to ignore her feelings. Kate herself, is feeling similarly torn by her attraction to Jamie, she knows Jamie is a player, she must also protect her heart.

Both women are vulnerable. They have to decide whether pursuing their path to love is worth the risk to their hearts.

When I read the first book Karis wrote back last year, I wondered how she would be able to top her debut book. Well, she has done it. This is a wonderfully refreshing, well written romance set among the horse world. Always a winning combination for me. This story is far more than a romance though. I don't want to give away any spoilers here, it would not be fair. If you love a good romance with a story to get your teeth in to, this in my opinion will fit the bill.

I think the whole book, including the characters, story and setting is absolutely spot on and perfection. I loved it from start to finish and was really sorry to reach the end. Another one for my re-read shelf. Dare I ask how this one will be topped? I hope we see another Karis Walsh book soon.

Worth buying....

I really enjoyed this book. When I spend my hard earned money I like it to be money well spent and in this case I believe it was. I also bought this authors other book 'Harmony' and that was an excellent read as well.
One of the main charters in Harmony is a viola player and at the end of the book the author, Karis Walsh mentions that she is also a viola player and in 'Worth the Risk'one of the main characters is a horse riding instructor and again at the end of this book the author says that she is also a horse riding instructor....I really hope Karis's next book is not about a serial killer ;-)

About the Author
Peter Baksa has advanced degrees from a Big Ten university and did research and study in the schools of architecture, finance, and law. He sat on the board of a bank that grew from a small-town bank into a multistate, $3 billion juggernaut. After being elected president of a small Illinois symphony, he took it from near bankruptcy to sold-out concerts. He has seen "poor"-working through scholarships, odd jobs for the university, writing and playing original songs with his band, and also dragged himself over to the brighter side of life, closing his first real estate deal in time to pay off his student loans as well as provide seed money for his boutique real estate company. This work answers questions we ask ourselves in moments of doubt and in moments of glory, rhetorical questions that often do not have a satisfactory answer. The best book I have ever read! Life changing!

I have read The Secret and many other motivational/ self-help books that refer to personal evolution and self mastery I got Point of Power as a gift and it was the best motivation aid I have ever had!
This book is perfect for someone who strives to be the best version of themselves. This book has helped me to heal my marriage and fix my financial state. This Point of Power made me realise that I'm totally in charge of my thoughts that produce actions and my destiny. I have found the intend, declare, detach process of living the life I always wanted revolutionary.I enjoyed correlation with quantum physics that explains the scientific explanation to why some people life the live they always wanted.

The book itself is written in a highly intellectual manner and different to books by authors like Tony Robbins or Napoleon Hill. I would deserve it as a describe it as a clear eclecticism of intellectual discourse, quantum physics and life coaching. Highly recommended to the highly intellectual readers.

In this aptly named study, Greenberg, a Bancroft Prize winner who also collaborated with Bob Woodward on The Agenda, sedulously avoids value judgments about the effectiveness of Richard Nixon's policies, offering instead a kaleidoscopic view of the man's many images: as Tricky Dick, as conspirator, as victim, as statesman, among others. Borrowing Woodward's device of calibrating his subjects through the eyes of others, Greenberg presents the opinions of Nixon loyalists, Nixon haters, pundits from the left and right, mainstream historians, revisionist historians, psychobiographers, the Washington press corps and members of the foreign policy establishment. According to Greenberg, this retrospective shows Nixon to have been the first postmodern president, the first whose image was purposefully manipulated for political reasons and without regard to accomplishments. The author also argues that the key to understanding Nixon is not in "discarding the many images of him... but [in] gathering and assembling them into a strange, irregular, mosaic." But with an impressive number of viewpoints sampled, hundreds of sources quoted and even TV shows Laugh-In and Saturday Night Live plumbed for Nixon references, readers may find the citations overwhelming. Still, for sheer drama, Nixon's career remains worthy of review, from his red-baiting 1950 Senate campaign against Helen Gahagan Douglas, his involvement in the Alger Hiss perjury case and the infamous "Checkers" speech to the Khrushchev kitchen debate, his China policy and the political drama of the century, Watergate. Nixon's Shadow sheds light on Nixon's life and legacy--and it opens up a fascinating world on the civic life of the United States. It's one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.
What I love about most this book is that it tells Nixon's story through the eyes of his critics and the lens of his detractors. In doing so, Greenberg opens up a whole new way, really, of thinking about our politics. The book marks a major contribution to the Nixon literature as well as a shrewd, detailed portrait of the rise of image-making in 20th century America.
By focusing on the forces that led to Nixon's rise and fall, Greenberg shows us how images in politics aren't simply products created by a candidate--they are, in fact, the result of complex forces in our culture and our politics. This book goes to the heart of our civic life. It is one of the most fascinating take our politics that I've ever had the pleasure to read--and one of the best-written non-fiction books to come down the pike in recent memory.

The Three (Four and Five) Faces of Dick Nixon

Was Richard Nixon the second coming of Hitler or the last great liberal president? Or, most likely, the greatest transformation artist since Lon Chaney? With all the spinning by Nixon and his foes, it may be impossible to ever definitively answer who our 37th president was. David Greenberg's compelling book tracks the many colors of this iconic chameleon. The first couple of chapters do a solid job recounting the Tricky Dicky days, kicked off by the warm (?), conniving (?), populist (?) Checkers speech-- Nixon's first great rebound. But it isn't until the Watergate and post-Watergate chapters that the book really takes off with fresh, provocative insights.
Greenberg escorts us down the twisted passageways of Nixon's psyche, recounting the many news, historical and entertainment sources that painted Nixon as an emotional cripple whose psychotic manipulations and paranoid rants wracked our nation's trust in government. Was that the real Nixon? The following section reviews the media sources, often prompted by the Nixon PR machine, that attempted to recast the by then ex-president as a great statesman who opened up China and held out an olive branch to the Soviets. Perhaps most suprising, and riveting, is the chapter that discusses the revisionist historians who paint Nixon's as the great liberal in conservative clothing-- the man who took the "Great Society" to new heights, shepherding legislation that integrated schools, bettered the lives of Native Americans, and expanded social programs for the poor.
Greenberg while refusing to swallow any of these images whole, uses his keen eye to find the credible core of each Nixonian persona. This is a memorable history that questions history itself, a book that asks-- is it possible to objectively capture any figure from history?

A 'tricky' dance across genres, masterfully done

Mixing psychology, media studies, political science, punditry, and good old-fashioned History with a capital 'H,' Greenberg manages to illuminate an oft-analyzed icon from a host of new and different perspectives. Reading this book was a bit like being a guest at a scintillating dinner party among intellectuals from a range of fields, in which a single topic dominates the evening's discussion and debate, but never gets boring because of the diversity of the company. Here, what is most impressive is that Greenberg (whom the book jacket indicates was trained as a traditional academic historian) manages to pull it off single-handedly, and so well. The breadth of 'takes' on Nixon included in this book was a risky move -- it might well have come out confusing, disjointed, or watered-down -- but like a modern-day Fred Astaire or Nipsey Russell, Greenberg manages to smoothly tap-dance across genres (and generations of Nixon fans & foes) without missing a beat. Hats off to the author for taking this risk, and for carrying it off with such grace and skill. Highly recommended for history buffs, pop culture buffs, and those of us who simply enjoy a good read.
