Needs a lot of polish...

Was overly disappointed in the book. Approximately 9 pages in length, and very loosely (poorly) structured. "Chapters" were less than a broken paragraph in length. No visuals to solidify his instruction, no examples on what patterns he was suggesting to watch for. Perhaps I should have watched some of the suggested YouTube videos, but in general, I just didn't care for the writing style. It was far too similar to my 8th grade son's unstructured writing style. Sorry... there was little to no "meat" in this pamphlet to go along with the lack of fluff he mentions in the first paragraph. Please spell-check your work prior to submission. I hate grammar nazis as much as the next guy, but to misspell "Incredibal" (In all caps, no less...) and "loose" (instead on lose...) is one of those pet peeves of mine.

This book is more useful and practical than most of the more polished books on the same subject. Gober makes direct, suggestions that can easily be checked against the market. He takes " no fluff" to an extreme and could define some of his terms more fully( for example,gate and fix the 6) I am still working on some of them! Buy the book is worth ten of the slick products that are selling products and going over familiar stuff again.

Guides you to many resources

This book is almost like a directory of websites for different resources we'll all need as we age. As with all Dummies books, it briefly explains things like Medicare, Assisted Living, Long Term Care Insurance, etc., but it gives you lists of websites to go to for more information. I like this because I want to know which sites are reputable and not something that will give me bad information. For this alone, I find this book very helpful. The book is only 341 pages and it covers just about every area of aging from staying in your own home to tables of the cost of assisted living facilities, transportation alternatives (which I really found helpful) and basic health information for aging people. There is a small section on finances and estate planning, but not that much - it's mostly on how to live as an elder, not a financial guide. The amount of information covered in the book is everything I've thought of, plus several things I didn't even know about. I would highly recommend this book to have on hand to give you a start on where to look when you need help. It's easy enough for an elder to read or for someone who is caring for an elder - just make sure if you are an elder yourself, you are comfortable with the computer because you will be looking at a lot of websites. But, with AARP behind the book, I feel confident that they are sending us to the right places online to look and that's very important.

Broad General Overview with Useful Pointers

This book covers a long list of topics including modifying your home to prevent falls, health care proxy documents and wills, i.e it is not just about finding a skilled nursing facility. It is targeted to readers who have very little knowledge and have not already done much investigation. It provides useful references to other sources of information and that in itself makes it a useful book to have on your shelf. (But I suspect that this information like most of the other information is easily accessible if you do an internet search.) I would have appreciated having more specific information on what various services and living arrangements cost in various states, but this level of information is not provided. I have to say that the only thing I actually learned from the book were a few little tidbits (Did you know that an overweight or paralyzed person requires a two person transfer -- more costly -- rather than a one person transfer?). Stuff like that. If a reader comes to this book having given absolutely no prior thought to the topic of long term care and general preparation for aging, he/she will find it a very good introduction. But if you are at the point where you are looking for specific answers to questions about finding caregivers, the cost of services, you should go straight to the internet. Received this through the Amazon Vine Program.

Well-written and comprehensive, but there is room for improvement

This well-written and comprehensive guide to long-term care planning will help you navigate the many aspects involved in helping yourself or an aging loved one gather information regarding such things as programs, services, facilities, and organizations focused on aiding the elderly. While the book itself can mostly deal with generalities only, almost every chapter provides pointers to online resources where more specific information can be found; the more important of these online resources are reprised in a final chapter and categorized for easier lookup. There are also special chapters on services available to caregivers, and topics relevant to specific populations of elderlies, such as military veterans and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elderlies.

The chapter on paying for care using vehicles such as long-term care insurance, reverse mortgage, and / or annuities was rather short and, in my opinion, could benefit from a more substantive discussion.

Ages 5^-8. The poetry doesn't quite scan, but that's more than balanced by Arnold's unusual topic and his hilarious illustrations. A pop-eyed youngster is having a hard time. He seems to be falling apart. After losing a few hairs, he thinks he's going bald; his belly button lint is his stuffing coming out; "a chunk of something gray and wet" from his nose is none other than a piece of his brain; and a loose tooth puts him into shock. "Quite soon I'll be in pieces in / A pile without a shape. / Thank goodness Dad keeps lots and lots / And lots of masking tape." The gross factor is a key ingredient here, with Arnold exploiting it nicely in bold, comical illustrations that catch the full-blown anxieties of the imaginative narrator. Arnold (The Simple People, 1992, etc.) cashes in by grossing out the picture-book set in this story in rhyme, which kids with rough-and-ready sensibilities will relish and fastidious adults will shun, for the same reasons. The goggle-eyed narrator has noticed that he loses hairs, his skin peels, and a tooth is loose, not to mention his discoveries of belly-button lint and nose yuck. He comes to the alarming conclusion that he's going bald and toothless, shedding his skin, losing his stuffing, and his brains are leaking out his nose. His parents reassure him that all these lost parts renew themselves. His response: ``That's really good to hear! Then tell me, what's this yellow stuff I got out of my ear?'' Stupid, silly, and base, in equal measure, this has watercolor illustrations that are textured with colored-pencil curlicues in such a way that they look hairy--like the tangles that clog a shower drain. Cute Story and Illustrations!

I have a read a few other books from this author, and I loved them when I was younger, so I knew I had to get some for my own children.

My kids and I absolutely LOVE this book! Ted Arnold's illustrations are both entertaining and fantastic. I love the little squiggles and the puns he adds to the book. The story is also great for helping explain rhyming to my children. They find it hilarious, and we have already read it many times since owning it. I know it is one we will keep coming back to. I definitely think that this book is the best out of the trio, but the second is pretty cute as well. I did end up returning the third as it did not really follow the same pattern as the first two and used words like 'stupid' that we do not use in out house.

Overall, It is a cute explanation to the questions kids may have about themselves as they are growing that you don't often think to explain, and the drawings just add even more to the humor. I would definitely recommend this book to others, you will not be disappointed.

Shipped quickly and condition was as advertised. The first in the trilogy. It's not too bad but if you can only purchase one, get Even More Parts. Its better than the rest. I do own all three books.

Read Aloud Favorite. WARNING: This will crack you up!

I love this author and illustrator! I love all his books but this is probably my favorite! This is a hilarious book about teeth falling out, scabs, snot, and the wonderful way our body changes, heals itself, gets rid of non essentials all from the view of a young boy. Every kid I know gets this as a gift! Yep, it's that good. Great read aloud! We always read this at B&N story times. It was favorite of the kids and parents.

In this brutally frank novel of maternal ambivalence, the narrator, a forty-seven-year-old divorc�e summering alone on the Ionian coast, becomes obsessed with a beautiful young mother who seems ill at ease with her husband’s rowdy, slightly menacing Neapolitan clan. When this woman’s daughter loses her doll, the older woman commits a small crime that she can’t explain even to herself. Although much of the drama takes place in her head, Ferrante’s gift for psychological horror renders it immediate and visceral, as when the narrator recalls the "animal opacity" with which she first longed for a child, before she was devoured by pregnancy.

This is one really… weird…. book.

This is one really… weird…. book. Look, I am not going to lie to you. The writing is fantastic. The subject, a mother honest about motherhood, is one of my favorite topics. As I read the book I kept thinking that this is a really well written book and I can totally equate with what the character means about finally be free of her grown up daughters and then WHAMO, it takes this really weird turn. Once it took this turn, I was hooked. I laughed out loud. I stared at the words in fascination/horror. I could not put the darn thing down! Good thing It is a fairly short book. Holy Moley. You gotta read it to believe it. I understand that the text was originally written in Italian and then translated to English. If the English version is that witty, biting, and passionate, I wonder what the original Italian translation feels like? On to "The Days of Abandonment," I can't help myself.

Dark Side of Maternal Instinct

Bright lights cause dark shadows and this book takes on the light of motherhood and its corresponding darker aspects. It is not a crime thriller where the children--grown and young--are in danger, It is a look into the psychology of a woman who never made peace with the sacrifice required by motherhood, but who needed the experience and her children for sanity. When her daughters left home---this is a very female, womanly book but not girlie--old issues started to crop up. The psychology rings true and the ending is surprising. Although this author has never been seen in public and there are rumors of various famous authors who may be writing under an alias, I will be surprised if a man has written this book. It is an easy read and I plan to read everything by this author.

Leda is a 47 year-old divorced woman, and mother to daughters, Bianca and Marta, now 22 and 24. The girls have recently moved from Italy to Toronto, Canada to live with their father. Leda is well educated and teaches at the university in Florence, Italy. Leda was not upset when her daughters moved away, in fact it was quite the opposite:

"When my daughters moved to Toronto, where their father had lived and worked for years, I was embarrassed and amazed to discover that I wasn't upset; rather, I felt light, as if only then had I definitively brought them into the world. For the first time in almost twenty-five years I was not aware of the anxiety of having to take care of them. The house was neat, as if no one lived there, I no longer had the constant bother of shopping and doing the laundry, the woman who for years had helped with the household chores found a better paying job, and I felt no need to replace her."

It's summer and since she is feeling happy about her new freedom, Leda decides to rent a beach house for six weeks, on the Ionian coast, near Naples. She packs her books and lesson plans for the coming school year and is planning to relax by lounging on the beach by day.

Early on she becomes fascinated by the interactions of an attractive young mother named Nina, and her young daughter, Elena. She also intently watches little Elena's interactions with her doll, which the girl calls by several different names. Several other family members visit the family on the beach as well. One day Leda notices the child by the waters edge, so she returns her to her mother who was lying on the beach blanket and hadn't noticed the child had wandered to the water. Another day when the family leaves the beach for the day, Leda notices that Elena's beloved doll was left buried in the sand. This incident upsets Leda, and suddenly this event, along with the interactions of mother and child, opens a floodgate of memories for Leda of her own days as a young mother. Some of the incidents which she recalls of things she did, and ways she reacted to her own daughters --were cringe-worthy.

This brief novella, just 124 pages, is sure to evoke emotions among readers, especially mothers. Narrated in the first person, this deep journey into a mother's psyche, gives the reader plenty to think about. Marriage, motherhood, personal freedom, sacrifice and career fulfillment are some of the conflicting issues that surface in this work.

Initially, I thought I might have a problem with the flow of the story due to the translation, but that was not the case. Once I got into the rhythm and into what was going on in Leda's head, I was hooked. I liked this one a lot, and would definitely recommend it.

Recent research into the military history of ancient Greece has questioned the central role traditionally ascribed to the famous hoplite phalanx by historians and suggested that even as late as the Persian Wars of 480479 BC, Greek battles consisted essentially of open fighting and duels between individual combatants, in an almost Homeric fashion. In this meticulous study, Adam Schwartz in turn questions the new orthodoxy. Departing from a detailed scrutiny of hoplite equipment and its physical characteristics, the author demonstrates that this equipment must in fact have been developed specifically to meet the needs of warriors fighting in phalanx formations, which, it is shown, can be traced back into the eighth century BC.

Excellent but Pricey!

Adam Schwartz's Reinstating the Hoplite is an excellent book, though rather expensive for what it delivers. In truth, I think that the hoplite's position is probably not so precarious as to really need 'reinstating' (at least here in the USA, where Victor Hanson's high valuation of that warrior type and its phalanx seems to define orthodoxy, he having recently taught at West Point and studies of similiar opinion currently being referenced by the Army's Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA). Nonetheless, Swartz here offers a most welcome defence of the primacy these themes had in ancient Greek battle that's both vigorous and very well researched.

After some introductory material (24 pages), the book gives an in-depth (77 page) evaluation of hoplite equipment (defensive and offensive) in support of the idea that it was developed specifically to support the phalanx. This is followed by a similarly detailed review (99 pages) of the phalanx and then a discussion on the duration of hoplite battles (25 pages), ending with a brief (9 page) summary of the author's conclusions. Among Schwartz's major contentions are: a) the phalanx existed prior to the development of hoplite equipment, which was designed specifically for use in that array; b) intentional pushing (known as 'othismos') was real, a physical shoving from the entire formation that combined with weapon strikes along the front to define the offensive capability of the phalanx; c) there was very little change in the nature of phalanx warfare from its inception in the late 8th century B.C. into the late 4th century B.C. Appended is an inventory of 41 battles (40 on land plus one naval action) selected from the period 490 B.C. (Marathon) to 338 B.C. (Chaironeia), each with a systematic listing of important characteristics. There is an extensive bibliography, a list of illustrations (there are 19), a 14-page general index, and indices of sources (one literary and the other for inscriptions and papyri).

Schwartz is a sound wordsmith, with writing that is both clear, concise, and obviously meant to embrace general readers despite the study's origins as an academic work. For the most part, he maintains a reasoned, patient tone, which makes his well-mounted arguments all the more convincing, though he still offers the occasional brief burst of passion to let the reader know that his heart is in the subject. An outstanding feature that Schwartz provides is an English translation for every major quote (and most minor ones) from German, Latin, and Greeks sources.

The book has few real weaknesses. One, however, is that it apparently went to the publisher early in 2007, thus it couldn't include information from Paul Bardunias' ground-breaking article on the hoplite shield (aspis) and othismos that was publshed in Ancient Warfare magazine later that year (Oct.). This is a true pity, as the concepts therein would have greatly bolstered Swartz's positions regarding othismos on several fronts. Thus, while the ovewhelming literary and logical support for a real, physical othismos is firmly established by Schwartz in effective arguments against its detractors, the 'smoking gun' mechanism that Bardunias' work might have provided is unfortunately lacking. Another weak point stems from what is otherwise a strength - strong academic roots. While Schwartz's book gives us access to a great deal of vital data from academia, it tends to ignore information from other, more popular sources. Thus, there is no reference here to many works published by Osprey and others for a more general readership, which contain very valuable information relative to issues being discussed.

Overall, Reinstating the Hoplite offers an excellent introduction to hoplite battle while at the same time providing considerable deeper detail that should inform even the most well-steeped devotee. Still, given that I feel Victor Hanson's The Western Way of War does much the same at considerably lower cost, I wouldn't recommend Reinstating the Hoplite to the casually interested newcomer, but rather only for truly serious students of Greek warfare.
